Why shouldn't the best be on the first team, even if they are new. If you make the teams based on how long you have been with the team, then the kids get complacent and won't work as hard.
While I agree the best players should be on the 1st team, most of the longtime kids do not show the most effort. This is maybe because they are comfortable that parent would work magic to keep them on the roster.
This is how it works in a nutshell with youth soccer - parents who want "it" more than their kid, maybe for prestige, would make sure to situate themselves with decision makers in the club. Nothing a round of golf or donation couldn't fix. This works, until it doesn't (change of leadership, college, new strong coach)

Well let’s remember they(travel soccer) are looking for the best player at each age group. By u16 they are not looking to develop any players because what does it matter. The players use to the club is done at u17. This is the age where soccer IQ really starts to play a big part but the club is petty much done with you at that age. The selection process is governed by which players will give me wins this year in this age group. If a kid is not picked for the top team by a club that kid is labeled as a 2nd team kid at that club.
If you are on a second team or riding the bench on the first team you are going to stay there unless you switch clubs. This is why is good to have more “elite” leagues vs less.
That is correct. Which player will give me the most wins this year. Not everyone agrees that should be the standard, which tends to correspond with physical development and not necessarily technical skill or soccer IQ. And if that thinking is appropriate, it would be fine if meaningful attention is given to developing the players on a club's second team. But that is not usually the case. There is no commitment to develop players, just a desire to win now.

Many clubs, if given a choice between two fairly equal players, one already with the club and another coming from outside, will take the player from outside of the club for their top team. Work ethic has nothing to do with it.

If they aren't working hard fine. It's how you define "the best." And puberty has a lot to do with it. The "best" is usually the biggest and strongest at any given age.

Girls u12-u18 have 2 ECNL teams and one state cup (third) team per age group.
Boys same age have 1 large academy/MLS team and 2-3 state cup teams per age group.
And in the U-littles, the girls have 2/3/4/3 teams for U8-U11,
For boys, it is 4/5/5/6 for same ages.
Was going to say, that’s not true.

Maybe because on the boys side, players earn their spot on the roster and the teams succeed. On the girls side, for years, the parents earn a spot for their DD on some rosters by manipulating influential coaches. Can't get rid of it completely, but that's finally being addressed now though.
Ha...sounds like you never had a boy in the program. Just as bad.
One of my son’s best friends got replaced on his team by a lesser player that was paying the coach for private lessons.
I complained to the program, and they saw nothing wrong with it.
