Also, do you not see the connection = you find Mormonism BS, but you don't see the same parallel to Christianity.

Why does it seem "far-fetched" to you? Because Palmyra is close by and not far, far away in Israel? Jesus is no more believable than the Angel Moroni.

Obviously, only natural forces were at work. The other stuff is made-up stories from before humans knew about science.

Why did any force, besides natural ones, have to be at work? No reason at all.

There’s no proof, no evidence. If you are wondering how tons of people started fabricating stories about a person that never existed, or if he did, was not anything more than a poor man who had some radical things to say, I will first refer you to the childhood game of telephone. Remember in those days people died young: 40-80 years might seem like a short time, but that could be 2-3 generations of oral traditions getting progressively larger and more embellished. Plenty of time to turn a broke bastard (in the actual sense, no judgment) into a miracle working son of God.

And then you can look at more modern examples where people invented religions out of whole cloth, like Mormonism and Scientology, and just how quickly people latched on.

It’s called faith for a reason - you have no proof and are being asked to believe anyway. The most credible stories have elements of truth. Historians really do think there was a great flood in the Middle East based on how many different cultures have myths surrounding it. But did Noah fill an ark with two of every species? No. That’s a story to explain why people survived despite a great flood. Other cultures have other stories.

I dont really think so- the same sort of beliefs pop up in many cultures around the world. he just lived in relatively recent times but not too recent like Muhammad/Baba Nanak. what I find remarkable is that one hand he is supposed to be a Jewish messiah but his message is SO Radically different- its universal, its kind and just based on character versus race, God is loving and generous and that is antithetical to the harsh cultures, both Roman and Jewish, that he preached in and that gave rise to the global force that is Christianity.

This isn't the gospels. It's not about "spreading the news" as Christians like to do. It is to have a discussion on whether a real person existed that formed the basis of "Jesus Christ".
