That’s a huge leap. If anything, I would think the family building the addition would have thought in advance about being good neighbors.

They thought people would like it, until Courtney started attacking them online.

Trust me, Courtney isn’t the only neighbor who was angry. She’s just the one most directly affected.

She did incite those others, though.

My point is that the homeowner building the addition is in a very strong position to make things unpleasant for Courtney. The more she throws her temper tantrum, the bigger the grudge will be. She isn't going to win this- it is just a matter of how badly she loses.

This post comes across as both threatening and misogynistic. “Temper tantrum”? Really? Would you use that phrase about a man?

The family next door is dealing with a three story tower that looks like an apartment building being built next door to them in their single family home neighborhood. Many, many people would not be happy with that situation. It is inappropriate to threaten people for voicing their opinion and asking questions about what is legal and permitted in their own neighborhood.

You can minimize and try to infantalize the reactions of the neighbors to this construction, but their feelings are real and understandable to many. The owners building this addition could have thought this whole thing through more clearly in advance and realized that an addition that looks like a multi family apartment building would appear out of place in a single family house neighborhood. They probably could have built an addition for more space that doesn’t look like an apartment building.

I’m not either of the PPs, but “tantrum” isn’t a sexist word. My 65 year old father throws tantrums, and we all tell him so.

I’m also not seeing any “threats” here.

Courtney’s feelings are fine. I wouldn’t like the addition either. At least my objection is her entitlement. She thinks she can dictate what someone else’s addition looks like even though it complies with legal requirements.

This is really my issue. There's a major problem in the DMV that people with money or political al connections believe rules and laws don't apply to them. If they don't like a development, road construction project, or zoning change, they file lawsuit to attempt to delay the project and/or override the will of the people.

This seems like another version of that. No one here seems to disagree that a project like this is legal in the county. Yet you're suggesting administrative and legal actions intended to punish or cost the homeowner in the hopes that he'll have to give up. Not because because there's anything legally wrong with it, but just because Courtney and her friends continued to attack him. The entitlement is outrageous.

No, people are looking for ways to deter the homeowner or make it unfeasible to do this because it sucks. That's it. People (including me) cannot believe the terrible bad judgment of this homeowner in doing something so clearly bad for his neighbors on multiple levels, and believe steps should be taken to try and dissuade him from it.

This would be different if the neighbors' objections were just with aesthetics. But it's not. This is going to cost the neighbor hundreds of thousands of dollars in housing value. Would you honestly just roll over in that situation because it was "technically legal"? I would not. I would fight.

That's obviously a subjective statement. If the building materials and colors are similar to other homes, you could absolutely say it blends in.

Most people would also say there are upper limits on how big a house can be in order to "blend in" and in particular whether the bulkiest part of the house is right on the property line or close to the street, instead of set back on the property like other homes in the neighborhood.

I think that's what annoys me most about what has been done here. There were ways for this family to add the same amount of square footage without sticking a three story building right against the shared property line with their neighbor. It honestly feels hostile to have chosen this particular approach, and that's where I think zoning should have pushed back and noted that the location of the addition is totally out of character for the neighborhood and impose real burdens on the next door neighbor. If that 3 story addition was at the back of the property, it would still be hideous but would solve the worst of the problems.

And no, cost is not a reasonable excuse for doing this. Sure, it may have been cheaper and easier to design the addition in this way. Well it would also be cheaper and easier for me to put in a pool by sticking it in the front yard because it's bigger than my backyard and it would be easier to get the equipment in. But you aren't allowed to do that because front yard pools cause hazards and negative externalities for neighbors. You don't just get to do the cheapest, easiest possible thing with your property. There are some minimum standards.

I think it's bad policy to restrict building codes based on aesthetics, but at least that's a reasonable response to this. Rather than yelling toward the sky and looking for technicalities.

That's an observation, not a threat. The pp that wrote that isn't a position to act on it.

Funny that you're focusing on the potential for bad behavior, though, and ignoring the actual bad conduct from Courtney.

That's not a threat? It's stating the obvious that people who own houses next to each other can retaliate in legal but unpleasant ways. Next they can paint their house lime green and have inflatables on the roof year round.

No, they mean a more recent immigrant, who can be white as well.

I stayed away from buying near "family compounds" as I called them when we were looking. At least one in our neighborhood is owned by white American born folks, but I have no desire to live near them either.

Perhaps you and Courtney can work together to bring back redlining.

I can guarantee you that very few in Greenbriar would support anything of the kind. We love our neighbors from all over the world. This family has been around for a while, so they aren’t a new family and/or recent immigrants. I know several of us fought back against videos that were attacking the family as “foreigners”

No one’s issue is with the family itself.

How would you know whether or not that is what happened? Are you part of any of the neighborhood boards/chats?

It is crazy to most of the neighbors in this ‘hood that something like this somehow got approved by the county.

Maybe the family really is that out of touch that they think this is lovely or whatever. Maybe they are shocked at the uproar. Who knows?

I don’t think the neighbors, including Courtney, actually care whether or not this family talks to them again. There have been rumblings of legal proceedings, but nothing has actually happened as of yet. The neighborhood seems to have settled into wait and see on this house and then moving forward with pursuing code changes through Herrity to prevent something like this for others going forward. The homeowner and family needs to watch their step going forward, though, as any shenanigans against neighbors or wrt who is living in this monstrosity will be brought to the attention of the proper authorities.

Didn't you read the articles and watch the videos? They lay out how this went down.

The "rumblings" about a lawsuit won't go beyond that. There isn't a cause of action.

I’ve read and seen everything I have been able to find, including what is on this thread.

I also am privy to the neighborhood chats, so know full well how this actually went down. Shoot, I even went online to get the Elliot in the Morning clips. My husband was out of town and getting texts from his office that he should call in because they were looking for people who have seen this thing in person.

So I’m not really sure what info you think I am lacking.
