Trump spent much of the last 9-12 months courting black men, often UMC or wealthier black men who felt that the Democratic party had not done enough for them. Trump convinced many of them that his actions, including tax cuts for them, had more impact on their lives than many of the Democratic plans which tended towards helping lower class minorities. He also convinced them that he had done more for them in his term than Biden had done in his term. Which, for wealthier blacks is potentially true. He actually did sway a number of black men into being supporters.
With Biden stepping down and Harris being the presumptive nominee, he's watched months of hard work to get a small number of black supporters drizzled away in the last 2 weeks. He likely now has fewer black supporters in 2024 than he had in 2020 and that's concerning him. He lost both the popular and electoral votes in 2020. He needs to find votes to convert back to his cause and he was making inroads with the minority communities (blacks, Hispanics and Asians). He was making headway and now he's lost all of that work. So he was desperate to find some way to keep the minority support from just moving back to the Democratic ticket. It's not working and he's getting frustrated.
