This thread is a good indication of why we had friends move from this area to SC and they seem happy and relaxed as can be living down there and out of this crazy bubble. I'm from here and can say that

How did you get into this? It sounds like a cool way to travel.

Yes please come to the travel forum and give us details! I approve!

I did an AMA in the travel forum a year or so ago if you search!

My husband and I met freshman year of college and we backpacked the world all 4 summers of college together. We did hostels, couch surfed, made tons of friends, and it became a huge part of our identity as a couple. Our honeymoon was the first "nice" vacation we took and we both hated it. Our souls are meant for adventures, connection, living like locals, finding joy in the unexpected, immersing ourselves in different cultures. We love continuing it on with our kids!

We need a healthy planet and our kids need it to be mentally and physically healthy and safe. Now the oysters in Biscayne Bay are full of forever chemicals. Now all streams have microplastics. Now all Americans have forever chemicals and BPA in their bodies and in their breast milk if they are lactating.

The European Food Safety Authority determined that the safety limit for BPA should be .05 nanograms per kilogram of body weight per day (ng/kg bw/day). According to the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the average U.S. resident over the age of two consumes 200 ng/kg bw/day—more than 5,000 times the new safety limit.

If the other mommies won't like us if we prioritize the environment in our choices and say so (if asked), are they really our friends? If the other mommies like us better because we got a big Tahoe, are they true friends?

Flame away I guess. And no, taking a flight or driving a car does not invalidate concern for the environment and prioritizing it when we can. And no, the appalling lack of action by corporations and politicians because of capitalism and money in politics does not mean our choices don't matter. Our buying power is powerful especially as wealthy and upper middle class women.

1. Go away
2. Tell this story to China and India - they are the real polluters
3. Go away now

You're dumb. Just really, really dumb.
A) We still pollute.
B) We have taken our fair share of the pollution pie (e.g., industrial revolution) and now are asking them to not do the same. How do you think that would go over if the roles were reversed? We have zero moral authority on that point.

DP. I also have a lot of existential anxiety over the state of our environment. And yes I have some judgment for the Kardashian loving conspicuous consumers out there and wish people would stop with all the cheap plastic goody bag favors.

But I’m also realistic that we aren’t going to individually bootstrap our way out of climate change. I can recycle, take public transit, buy natural fibers, install solar panels, renovate my older home to be more energy efficient, etc. until I’m blue in the face and maybe I can pay myself on the back. But it won’t change anything.

Because the biggest issues are corporate polluters, the factory farm/fishing industries, and overseas factories. Inflation is hitting families hard and so I’m not surprised they turn to cheap overseas synthetic crap and mass produced foods. Let’s be real, living a green lifestyle can be expensive. Those local farm food deliveries are not cheap and are generally available in more expensive neighborhoods. A short commute is a luxury, I am not going to blame the blue collar workers fixing my plumbing who drive 40 miles to work because that is how far away they can afford to live.

This is a global problem and we need progressive leaders to solve this. I blame republican politicians and news channels that lie lie lie about global warming because they have deep pockets to protect by keeping the status quo going. Gotta think about the share holders.

I am betting a lot of us got sucked in by defending our neighborhoods, schools, and lifestyles, but then at some point decided the best defense was a good offense - whereupon we also became part of the problem.

In any event this forum is truly toxic, even if addictive, and we would be better off if it did not exist. I don’t really know how the moderator lives with himself for making this area a less pleasant place to live.

Some good points. Well, there's always NextDoor. That makes any forum look good by comparison

They should rename that site to snakenextdoor.

Same. Love referring to ourselves as the Larlos. And I’m always perplexed by women who are happy to have their children their husband’s last name, but are appalled at taking it for themselves. Different strokes.

I don’t live in DCUM land, but I do live in the SF Bay Area. I’m practically a pariah because of my addiction to cakesters amongst the healthy eaters. There was a naked homeless guy yelling outside the office the other day and I said that I bet he’d chill and be happy if I gave him some cakesters. Everyone was like, I can’t believe you’re joking about his plight or your addiction. True story-hand on the Bible level truth-he took a dump on the sidewalk 10 minutes later. I was like, “see? He had tummy troubles. Cakesters might have helped him go with less discomfort.” I said that because they’ve changed my digestive system. My tummy makes noises it didn’t before. I’m pretty sure we’re using more toilet paper in our house and I’m pretty sure the reason is me. And cakesters. And I’m pretty sure DCUM won’t approve of any of that lifestyle choice.

I’ve bought all of them at every Safeway, Target, and Walgreens (the only stores I’ve seen them in locally). I did a Target delivery order at work the other day and I was beside myself when I saw they had cakesters available. The shopper called to say they were out of stock and to see if I wanted them to substitute anything else. I said no thanks because regular Oreos are a different texture and he said he totally understood and lamented how hard it is to find cakesters. At first I was happy to find a kindred spirit, then I felt really irritated because he’s been eating my cakesters! I ordered all the ones I could find for under $7/box on Amazon. I’ve had to resort to having to order them from target online.

Otherwise I’m a healthy eater. Normal weight, no excesses. I eat at nice restaurants. I do hello fresh and eat salads and all that BS. Cakesters though. They’re like heroin.

For once DCUM has left me speechless.

Cakesters lady here. First, you’re welcome. I enjoy being part of new experiences for people, so that was great for me too. Second, I’m really curious which part of the bolded got you there. Was it that there was a naked guy yelling who then pooped on the sidewalk, that my coworkers thought I was nutty for making jokes, or that I was speculating on the effects of my favorite treat on naked homeless dude?

Last weekend my stomach was making some scary noises but I had run out of cakesters and was detoxing. DH commented on the noise and I said I thought it was a withdrawal symptom. He said A) that’s not true and B) whether that’s true or not, I definitely have a cakester problem.

To the PP who said they’re off to buy cakesters now, don’t do it! I’m not even sure they taste good anymore. But if you do buy some, grab some quilted northern triple ply while you’re there. You’ll thank me later.

These kinda sound like something marketed in 1998 so if you’re stomach’s grumbling maybe check the expiration dates in case they’re actually from 1998. Although now that I think about it, the chemicals in there would probably keep them fresh.

Ps I LOVE Devil Dogs even though they taste synthetic, the only reason I don’t have this problem is bec they don’t sell them in my part of the country.

Nah, not expired, just bad for you.

Since you brought it up, here’s some cakesters history for you. They were released in 2007, and discontinued in 2012. There was never an official reason given, but I think everyone kind of assumed it was poor sales. There didn’t seem to be any real problems. Then after a decade, they rereleased them. I assumed they’d revamp them like new coke, but they’re still pretty much the same bad for you goodness as always. I like to imagine some young adult binging on cakesters during college, and being so disappointed when they were discontinued, they vowed to bring them back someday. They worked their way up through Nabisco ranks until they got enough power to redeploy the cakester bakers. But probably they just found a massive warehouse and realized it was easier to relabel them with new expiration dates and sell them to me than to destroy them (they’re like twinkies, pretty sure they’ll survive anything).
