Yes, why are so many of us depressed enough to warrant taking an antidepressant? This is absurd, are we unable to learn healthy coping skills? We just give up and tell our physicians we want to die? Really?

I've been depressed but was too embarrassed to ask for help. I wasn't suicidal mostly because I didn't want to do that to DH, DS, and my family. But there were days that I would have been ok if I got in a fatal car accident or simply didn't wake up. Depression is a beast. It can make you feel like you can't function, that you're worthless, etc. And for many people, depression is a chemical imbalance, not just not being able to cope. And that's always existed people just didnt talk about it.
I do get your point. And I do think that there are problems in society that are leading towards spikes in depression and anxiety. But I dont know if you realize how dismissive and insensitive you are being. And you may not be on antidepressants, but you certainly don't seem like a good person.
I understand how people can become depressed and anxious, but once prescribed these meds people generally never come off of them. This seems like a racket to me. And why is it that every other person I know takes a psych med? Something is very wrong with this. I have become jaded and hardened perhaps, I have highly functioning autistic family members who can’t be ‘fixed’ and there is no help for them, it’s who they are. It’s my job in life to give them life experiences and tools to cope. There is very little help for high functioning autistic people. It’s hard, very hard, I think of other people complaining and crying about their cushy lives and how they need their zoloft. It’s just unreal, they just seem so weak and have such a victim mentality.

You misunderstand the legal definitions here. Involuntary intoxication doesn’t mean high or impaired like by alcohol or other similar substances. It means that she was subject to the effects of the drugs prescribed which in some cases can be suicidality and homicidal thoughts. Those effects would not necessarily be obvious to her husband as the effects of alcoholic or other high-inducing drugs would be. But it is still intoxicating in the way that those drugs can be.
This might be confusing for you and apologies if I’m not helping to clarify but I assure you it is a concept that all the criminal lawyers and judges will grasp and for which there is a sound legal basis in statute and case law.
As an attempt at further elucidation - if you were force fed copious amounts of alcohol or other intoxicating drug against your will, and that intoxication led you to attack someone or commit another crime, you would have a defense in the law because your intoxication was involuntary. You didn’t plan or seek to get drunk or high. Likewise because she was fed all these drugs by physicians she trusted, she didn’t take them of her own initiative but in reliance on medical advice and expertise. That they caused her to experience suicidal and homicidal thoughts is a side effect of the drugs which she didn’t seek and thus she has this defense under the law. That isn’t to say it’s an automatic pass but a jury could certainly be convinced by it if they hear from experts etc. as to the validity of her claims. The defense only needs to convince one skeptical juror to hang the jury, convince a few and you might get yourself an acquittal. So this defense gives the defendant leverage in moving forward to possibly negotiate her case. The critical factor will be the mental health assessments of the state and defense - if the state’s expert believes she lacked mens rea she may be able to be committed to mental health facility indefinitely in lieu of facing trial and potentially prison. It will be a fascinating case to watch but of course for the Clancys it is all just hell.
This is not accurate. She will stand trial unless she pleads guilty, is found incompetent to stand trial, or the state drops the charges. If her argument is that it was over-medication that made her insane, then once the over-medication is fixed, she should not be found incompetent to stand trial.

I’m very hesitant to try SSRIs as I think the research demonstrates that they aren’t all that effective. But I would never make this kind of argument. Because it’s not that simple as meds=overuse.
I could go to my obgyn today and tell them I feel sad and depressed and tired and easily get a script for an antidepressant. I can’t go in and request insulin, or a nebulizer or lasix or eliquis oh, but I could easily get any antidepressant or anxiolytic I want.
Had you thought about how depression is different from a disorder that relies for diagnosis on lab results? Or on a physical exam vitals value?
Any ideas at all how that might be different than a mood disorder? C'mon.
