Columbia is an Ivy + in a rapidly gentrifying part of Manhattan.

There's no shortage of top, wealthy international students that wouldn't rush the opportunity to attend Columbia. By that metric, it's really only behind Harvard since the name brand carries so much weight and Cambridge/Boston is cosmopolitan enough. MIT, Stanford, and for some even Berkeley beat it for engineering-focused internationals.

Wealthy international students, and even wealthy American students today, want to attend school in wealthy metropolises, not a third-rate town like Yale's or a sleepy suburb like Princeton, or worse a rural middle of nowhere like Dartmouth. Not to add these schools reflect the epitome of old-money WASP snobbery with weirdly exclusive clubs, which wealthy internationals would avoid given they have more cosmopolitan options.

Harvard is ironically the most diverse in this aspect, other than perhaps Brown/Cornell.

Penn is in Philadelphia, Chicago in Chicago and Hopkins in Baltimore - none of these cities are particularly attractive to any international or even American students for obvious reasons.

Both UCLA and NYU have received huge boosts in both applicant numbers and general reputation. They are in the most desirable parts of the two largest and most internationally well-known cities in the US.

Please explain the "obvious" reasons. Chicago, for instance, is the 3rd largest city in America and has lots of appeal.

There is a safety concern for U Chicago. Otherwise it will be more attractive.

1) Is Columbia safe?
2) Trying to understand the reference of Columbia as an Ivy + connotes. Please expound.
3) Would Columbia be ranked higher than Princeton, if its campus were in Princeton, NJ?
4) You state that New Haven, CT is a third rate town. Please list some first rate towns and some second rate towns.
5) "Not to add these schools reflect the epitome of old-money WASP snobbery with weirdly exclusive clubs, which wealthy internationals would avoid given they have more cosmopolitan options." Very inaccurate and ignorant assessment.

What is sad is knowing there are parents who come on here pushing their kids’ 4 year college experience based on what they see in parchment. Parchment is is for entertainment purpose; it’s comedy, like Saturday Night Live. You have to feel sorry for kids who got these parents who are dumb as a rock.

What's sad is seeing posters who derive so much of their sense of self-worth from what might be a short-lived blip in the ranking of one school by a single publication. You end up credentialing that one publication and revealing your own insecurities far more than you'll probably ever realize.

My post is about parchment. Nothing else. You are the poster that’s on a 24/7 negative campaign.

What's sad is seeing certain self-righteous posters who refuse to see the whole picture (and a quickly changing college admissions landscape) and stick to their preconceived notions and fail to base their argument on any substantial data. All I can see on this thread is just some incoherent, biased, (and incredibly racist) rants.

The “whole picture” requires a perspective far broader than that displayed by a few posters who care only about arguing incessantly about whether one or two schools like Columbia are better than almost 4000 others. Invoking racism when your own myopia is so blatantly obvious just underscores the blatant narcissism.

Plenty of drunken idiots throwing up on Yale campus on Friday and Saturday nights.

I met plenty of losers who attended Yale. Not all were top students.

Did one of them puke on you or something? That’s a lot of resentment packed into a few sentences.

Lots of parents that send there kids off to yale and harvard and columbia are a little surprised and disappointed at all the drinking and puking. You think these places are more special and different than they are in fact. All great schools but they are still full of puking undergrads like all the rest.

Harvard and Yale a tier above Columbia. Columbia is peers with Penn

And your reasoning behind this statement?

If this isn't apparent to you, you are lost. Harvard and Yale both have endowments above $30B+. Columbia isn't even worth $10B

In fact, Notre Dame is richer and has more resources than Columbia

Or Michigan and Northwestern for that matter. But no one would really turn down Columbia for Michigan, NW, or Notre Dame given the chance. Just like very few would turn down Harvard or Yale for Columbia, unless for financial aid reasons.

Never heard anyone who turned down Yale or Princeton for Columbia. The students and their parents are smarter than some of the folks here because they know where they should go when they are admitted to Columbia and Yale/Princeton. The lopsided decisions are not even close.

https://www.parchment.com/c/college/tools/college-cross-admit-comparison.php?compare=Yale+University&with=Columbia+University+in+the+City+of+New+York
https://www.parchment.com/c/college/tools/college-cross-admit-comparison.php?compare=Princeton+University&with=Columbia+University+in+the+City+of+New+York

Yes, Yale and Princeton are preferred over Columbia, but the numbers should actually be less than the parchment report because of Columbia’s ED. Those who have Columbia as their first choice would ED and not apply to Yale and Princeton, so those people are not counted in this data set.

When presented with both options, having 33% of the applicants picking Columbia over Princeton and 29% picking Columbia over Yale isn't nearly as "lopsided" as PP make it out to be. A lopsided matchup would be something like Princeton vs. Cornell where 5% pick Cornell or Princeton vs. Dartmouth where only 12% of the kids pick Dartmouth.
