This conversation is taking me back. I spent most of my junior year in high school practicing for a local (major metropolitan area) music competition which I didn't win. I was a finalist, but the girl that won had parents who had literally rigged the competition in her favor. Every one else had to perform works from a certain repertoire list -- except her. She showed up and played different music and apparently her parents had made a deal with the university that hosted the competition and the judges because she "needed to win" this competition in order to get into a conservatory and the rest of us were just little Asian kids who wanted to go to medical school, so you know . . .

What I remember was her entitlement, even after the scheme was uncovered -- like of course this prize should have been given to her and not to us poor kids who actually practiced. I remember being really bitter that I had given up so much. I didn't go on vacation with my family at Christmas but stayed home to practice. I didn't go to the prom because I wanted to stay home and practice. And this entitled girl didn't miss out on a single activity, not a prom or a vacation.

I got over it, but always assumed it was a bug, not a feature of American life. Kind of sad to realize that indeed the deck has always been stacked against us hard working Joes and that there is an entire group of people who believe that the rules don't apply to them, because they don't.

Um, I'm a black woman and I'm still surprised. Why not just donate directly to the schools? Why have the kids go to college at all? As PPS have mentioned, they are already set for life.

Because this is cheaper. Donating $15k doesn’t get you very far. But for the idiot who spent $6+mil, yeah good point.

It costs about 2-4 million in giving if you want your kid in at Penn.

But bribing a coach to put a recruit tag on you can be had as low as 75-100k.

Coaches in the Ivy League are poorly paid so are ripe targets for bribes.

Are you seriously comparing open/honest test prep with paying someone to actually take the test for you or bribing a university official to help get your kid admitted? That's like comparing dieting and exercising to getting liposuction and tummy tucks. There is a difference between what you actually DO and what is done for you.

I'm saying that test prep does not show the actual ability of the kid compared to the kids that don't test prep.

It's more like give your kid organic veggies and fruits and give another kid oodles of noodles and mac and cheese ... then compare their weight and say your kid worked harder. They didn't... they were given better food. Your kid isn't better... their SAT score is manipulated by the Test prep. If you kid was so smart they would not need to test prep... but since everybody test preps you have to.

It's like football players who don't do steroids are expected to compete against players that do take steroids... it's unfair.

If my kid chose to spend his Saturday afternoons doing test prep than he probably should do better on a test that another kid didn't bother to take seriously. There is so much free test prep out there now and you can google testing strategies. That's not cheating, that is called being prepared for an important test.

Students have been test prepping for a long time - I attended a test prep at my HS 35 years ago. Had I not taken the math courses and English courses leading up to the SAT, all the test prep in the world wouldn't have helped me to learn the material. Prep was more about getting familiarized with the test and learning test taking strategies.

Openly prepping for a test in an above board manner is NOT the same thing as being given a cheat sheet or paying someone to take the test for you or cheating off of the person sitting next to you.

I'm not super pissed, and I will use tutors for my kids when they need it. Especially for the SAT/ACT. Because I can afford it.

I didn't make up the rules of the game, just playing the game.

And guess what? When my kids need to take the LSAT or the MCAT? They'll probably pay for a tutor or a prep class then too. Shocker, I know!!

NP here. My friends and I came from poor and working class households. We worked after school or on weekends. We test prepped using books from the library. We all did well enough -- I went to NYU on a full ride, my friends went to SUNYs, one to Boston, one to Yale, one to Harvard. It's not easy but it's not impossible. It's also not outright fraud!

I'm glad my kids will have Khan Academy and likely other free options.
