Oh, please. The vast majority never even gave it a thought. Very simple: drop the initials and don't celebrate Jeb Stuart. (I don't think they were celebrating him, in any case.)
It would require far more than dropping some initials to rebrand that school's Confederate legacy, which is what the School Board has now done.

Sorry (not really) that our elected School Board decided it was long past time to stop sucking up to the Confederacy.
Actually, not so much do they send a message. I bet if you ask Woodson students, that few know who it was named for unless the school makes an issue of it. Same with Robinson.
No one is "sucking up" to the Confederacy when they think the money would be better spent elsewhere. Dropping "Jeb" long ago, would have solved that issue, in any case.

Yes. I vote on issues, too. Wasting taxpayer money on something like this is a great example of an issue that concerns me. Ignoring the community's wishes is another issue that disturbs me.
This was something that could have been easily resolved. The SB could/should have just directed that the school would be referred to as Stuart years ago. without going through a name change. They could have directed that references to Jeb be eliminated as uniforms, etc. were replaced. In a few years, the Jeb part would have been eliminated.
Money saved: close to $1million.
That would accomplish nothing. Next time you take issue with getting called a neo-Confederate, you might want to pause and think about why that might be the case.
One million dollars would be better spent on educating children. If you don't understand that and must turn to name calling, then you might need to be the one to pause.

I'll be voting for Republican candidates next time. They could not possibly make a bigger hash of this than Evans did.

Let's see what we have so far:
a juvie high school
Buford Justice (a la Smokey and the Bandits)--great mascot, by the way--dressed in a trooper uniform (highly padded) with a trooper hat
Just-ICE (particularly ironic, considering the demographics)
Social Justice Warriors
