Perhaps you simply don't know all the atheists around you? Certainly some of us are more vocal than others. I'm an atheist and would never want to be condescending toward those who believe in a God - even on an anonymous forum. Sure, some atheist are condescending but so are some religions folks. I mean, really, has an atheist ever come knocking on your door to ridicule you for your beliefs? Or to save you from yourself? Some people are just jerks.

I think basically a lot of people who are patting themselves on the back for "rescuing" are essentially subsidizing puppy mills and backyard breeders. Plus, as another PP pointed out, the same people don't seem to have much trouble eating factory farmed meat.


I believe in awareness. Know who you're adopting from and what you're eating.
I've two adopted cats, and I know exactly where they're from. Shelters in Seattle seem pretty transparent, at least the ones we've dealt with. They usually have the origin of the animal for you. And I've seen puppy mill pups but they're publicized rescue missions of places that were shut down.

My friends in SC are doing good work for abandoned animals. No dog deserves to mistreated.

I haven't run into anyone that "pats themselves on the back" for rescuing, but I'm sure it's prevalent.

NP here. I am enraged by all the free stuff SN parents get that have nothing to do withy their child's SN. Uh, wha? Food stamps is a means-based program, as is Medicaid -- if they are indeed "very wealthy" then they wouldn't be eligible for those programs. And I've never heard of a free nanny, no way. Maybe an aid in the classroom? If her child is eligible for a free special needs preschool and full-time aid, you shouldn't be enraged or envious...it means her child is quite disabled.



It's all true. The means test for Medicaid/food stamps is done ON THE KID, who has no assets. All his copays and RX's are paid by Medicaid, and his food is bought with food stamps. In addition to preschool five days a week, his mom is allowed 42 hours of nanny care paid. She does not work, has two NT kids, lives in a 6000sf house and drives a large luxury SUV. Her SN child walks, talks, eats, and is potty trained, he is just delayed pretty significantly. I don't see why she needs a tax payer paid nanny because of that.


No way. I've applied and been denied services for a child because we had assets. Until the kid is 18, it's all about your income and savings. Not theirs.

I think homeschooling is too often a cover for indoctrination into wacko extremist philosophies like Quiverfull and/or hiding abuse from mandated reporters and parents should not have the right to stunt their children's growth by isolating them and homeschooling them with unadulterated nonsense. The Germans have the right idea by banning it. I'm sure there are plenty of lovely homeschooling families out there with a well-balanced curriculum, but too bad.

Parents should also not have the right to curse their children with monikers like Mykynzy or Chlamydia and the US should have naming laws like many European countries.

I think religious exemptions for those who refuse to vaccinate should be eliminated. An act does not become better or worse because the person committing it claims to be religious. An unvaccinated child either is a danger, or it is not. He or she doesn't become any less or more dangerous because his daddy and mommy did it for god.

I don't understand highly educated/marketable people -- i.e. top 10 MBA grads or top 10 law school grads or PhDs -- who don't come from family money opt to go into things like non-profits or start-ups and then complain (like everyone else) about their job or salary. I mean if you come from family money and have a trust fund supplementing your income, do what you want. But if you don't have that and you choose to be a non profit lawyer or a public defender, when you have the grades and pedigree to get a biglaw job and make money -- well am I really supposed to feel that bad for you??

I think all the Penn State hate is ludicrous (and no I did not go there). It was 1 guy who abused a few dozen kids -- the guy has been dealt with and the kids (now adults) have received huge settlements. To pin this on an entire football program is ridiculous, esp when there were 1-2 people in the whole program who had knowledge, the guy who committed the crimes was a former coach with access to the building - not a current employee, and the current players and students had absolutely nothing to do with it and weren't even at the school at the time the events occurred.
