You're wrong. My son is in 7th grade. He's 12. Children in his class have begun turning 14. Most of the Sept-Mar birthdays are going to be kids turning 13, but there are also the occasional children turning 14 years old.

I have a July birthday boy. He DID NOT stay back.
Not to brag, but he's a very talented athlete in many different sports and he's also tall and solidly built. I have parents from the other teams we play asking me ALL THE TIME if I kept him back.
He's usually the YOUNGEST on the field/court.

If we had kept him back I could not imagine him playing against kids up to 2 years younger than him. It wouldn't be fair.

I know of two boys with February birthdays who were redshirted. I admit, I think they're nuts. But they're not that unusual, here in Fairfax.

We have since switched schools, but at our former school there was a boy who turned two years older than our child when they had a birthday during the school year. He will graduate from HS at 19. He will turn 16 in 9th grade.

I taught a student who graduated at 20 last year. Yes, he was clearly on the spectrum (the parents refused to admit this).
Point made. Disabled children are exceptional.

KG is NOT mandatory in VA. In fact, Schools can't force a holdback! Parents may have been misinformed or uninformed. VA is a parents rights state, so parents MUST agree!

There were 2 kids in my son's K class who were 7, but they were not redshirted. Unfortunately, they had missed too many days of K to move on to 1st grade. It seemed like maybe they had some issues at home. It was probably necessary for them to do K again in order to make up the work that they had missed. They were nice kids and I don't feel that the rest of the class suffered any adverse effects from them being there for another year.

There is a child in my DC's class who is 2 yrs older than my child, May birthday. The child turned 9 in 2nd grade. My child was still 7. So, yes, it does happen.
