How many of those 99.9999% of cases are perpetrated by rich, white ladies? (Or even just ladies?) It’s the incredibly unusual circumstances here that would seem to make it newsworthy. The media LOVES to expose the misdeeds of rich, white people.
There has been a story on the Charlottesville CBS website and an article on the RTD website from another source. This has not been mentioned on any local Richmond tv stations at all. It is surprising because the family has strong Richmond connections, there are not many female child predators and generally white female predators DO make the news. Think of all the stories of the white female teachers having sexual relationships with high school students.
Also, no Wash Post, WTOP, etc. These outlets report tons of stories out of Charlottesville.
I do find this unusual.
White mom suburban housewife arrested for child porn and attempted sexual exploitation pretty much screams news headline, and definitely above the local level!
Plus, tons of visuals of her all over the place so it’s a pretty easy story to tell. Go to Warrenton and do your standup in front of the motel.
Not really. Do you know how many terrible things actually happen to children every day, up to and including torture and murder? This is an extremely salacious story but no actual children were harmed. It’s main interest is local. At most you can expect coverage from the yellow press like NY Post and possibly some kind of C list Dateline show.
I have worked in both local and network news. Salacious sells, heartwarming not so much.
And yes, stories do get suppressed. People to you what to cover and you do it. Not too many choices made at the lower level.
Nobody is covering this up at WaPo or CNN. The bottom feeders that profit of this kind of crime (Daily Mail, NY Post) will cover it.
If reputable news sources like WAPO and CNN don't report this kind of crime, how would people learn about it? You are indicating that reporting it to the public is only for "bottom feeders."

In her correspondence with the FBI agent online, she distributed videos of children being raped by adults so yes, actual children were harmed.
I mean yes, ok. But do you know how many crimes happen to kids every day? There were not one but two brutal executions of parents right in front of their kids in DC this year. Barely any coverage. Not even an arrest for one of them.
Ask yourself why THIS crime in particular deserves more coverage to you?
A) no one said this crime deserves more coverage than other crimes
B) I am well aware horrific crimes hapoen to kids every day since I work with kids and unfortunately have seen way too much of this first hand
C) if the mainstream media doesn’t report about crimes how will the general public know about them? all crimes deserve news coverage.

He’s a magistrate and no he cannot.
The truth is that we have basically no local news in most cities nowadays. Someone posted saying the Richmond newspaper is hardly limping along with a skeleton staff. The local news we do have largely is like a social page that sells stuff like home design by profiling rich people, so no real incentive to muckrake there.
I feel bad for the ex because in another career, he could change his name and move towns to protect the kids from all the gosslp. That’s hard for someone in his position to do. I think if I were him I would probably change the kids last name to their step mom’s name, and maybe look for a position with a law firm in someplace like Denver or Portland, if those states have bar reciprocity.

There is something inherantly 'off' about her based on the photo posted. I can't put my finger on it, she just looks like she has 'issues'. This makes me so sad for children in today's world. I'm sure this isn't her first rodeo with this type of heinous crime. I hope other victims come forward. Monsters don't live in the dark anymore, they are know community members. Sad and sickening!
Eh, she looks like a middle-aged mom who was maybe once a sorority girl. She’s a monster, but nothing about having a sharp-nose, highlights, whatever you see there rings bells for me.
Same, that is the thing, people who do unspeakable things tend to blend in and look like everyone else.
I'm curious what her behavior was like in kid settings and if she fit well there. I've seen posts from HS classmates, people who knew her in college and early in work life/career. She was said to volunteer at their school.
I'm assuming the public sex charges were a shock to parents but any signs before then? I thought that charge precipitated the divorce but it seems that it may have followed it? Can anyone clarify the timeline? Some posts have indicated her contact with her kids after that has been pretty minimal, hopefully they are safe and getting help for anything they need. Just divorce is hard on kids, then the dad remarried, then the sex conviction then this, plus she seems very chaotic. Hopefully she did not harm them.
Re: news coverage, I think the off the charts graphic and horrifying details of this are something most people do not want to know. Wish I had not read the charging documents myself.

There was no 8 year old girl at the hotel for her to molest, but Hoppe distributed child porn, so there were real children harmed.

I don’t know any of the actors or schools you mentioned (apart from UVA) but this story is horrifying. It is hard to believe that any mother could do these despicable things to children.
I hope her own children never suffered any of these abuses.
It is just difficult to comprehend this vile behavior.
The only good that could come out of it (apart from her being removed from society) woukd be that she helps police or federal agents to take down some child porn networks.
What a nightmare that people like this exist.
Her children were removed a while ago from her care. I don’t think she will be much help since she’s basically insane. Her family is actually relieved she is now locked up. She had to do something and get caught for her to be put behind bars.
You people really don’t understand this case at all.
It doesn't help you cause to just say "you don't really understand."
Explain something that makes us think differently. Did they try to get her the best help money could buy but she refused? Did they try and fail to have her institutionalized? Did they try to monitor her activities? Did they try to find legal/financial ways to restrict them? Did they go to the police with each and every illegal act in order to keep the public safe?
I am relieved to hear that the family protected their own, but is that all you mean? Is there anything beyond, after getting her out of jail, we watched (or didn't watch?) her deteriorate from afar while she was committing crimes?
