Restaurants, shopping, and theater are not strictly necessary for "life". Get some perspective here. Across human history people have dealt with far more serious privations.

That’s pretty simplistic and a bit of retroactive rose colored glasses. It was not a simple cold two years ago.
I had it 2 years ago and it wasn’t even a cold. 12 hour fever and lost smell and taste for a few days. Most people I know were similar even 2 years ago. I’d guess 95% of the people I know have had it, I don’t know anyone who died and only know one person who was hospitalized (he fully recovered).

+1. If the elderly were really that concerned, then they should have isolated themselves. Instead the harshest restrictions were on the lowest risk group.

I could not get any treatments. You think it’s that easy? And I have health issues. Still told no. Told to wait it out and if breathing is an issue and my pulse ox says it is, to go to the er. I don’t feel well enough to get to the er and spouse also has it and cannot drive me. We are vaccinated and on the extreme side of cautious and still got it. This new variant is far worse. Some good the vaccines did. This is not mild discomfort.
Yet you’re still posting on Dcum at almost midnight, so it couldn’t be that bad.
What did your doctor say when you asked for a paxlovid prescription? And why didn’t you simply go to a test-to-treat location if you wanted it?

I don’t understand what data you are looking at that is telling you the current variants are causing severe disease in people with vaccine or naturally acquired immunity.
Because for me it’s not about severe illness it’s about catching it. We have it now. We did not report it so I can tell you numbers are not accurate. It is miserable. I don’t want this again. Guess it’s time to start digging out a basement to hide in.
I’ve had it too. Being sick isn’t fun, but I would rather be sick occasionally than go back to 2020 restrictions.
We never had real restrictions and I’d rather have precautions than go through this again. You can get it multiple times. Come school start it’s going to be a hot mess.
My kid really did kindergarten on an iPad, so don’t tell me there were no restrictions. Also we were warned school was going to be a disaster when they started 2 days a week in spring 2021 and then again for full time in fall of 2021 and then AGAIN after winter break in 2022 and yet again after spring break in 2022. You know what? It was fine. We will be fine.

I have it now. What to come over and hang out since it’s no big deal? Ignore all the coughing, stuff coming out of different body parts, etc. no worries though. It is as bad as it seems.
