The tragedy is that these mass murders could be stopped. We, as a country, choose not to do anything about them. You or your loved ones could be next.
The Highland Park shooter was allowed to legally buy guns even though there had been prior domestic disturbance calls, suicide attempts, police taking knives from the home. Along with school disciplinary records involving violence.
The Virginia Tech shooter was allowed to legally buy guns even though his mental health records clearly indicated serious problems.
We need to change the laws such that any such item like that must be reported to a national database as a flag to prevent them from being able to legally buy guns. And, any reported incident involving violence or mental health crisis should include checking for and removing any weapons from the individual's possession.
That, and we need much stronger controls and trackability to shut down the underground black market for guns not legally purchased.
The legal, responsible gun owners and "good guys with guns" should have absolutely no problem with any of this. So why can't we get anything done?
Because it always ends up being subject to abuse - such as the guy in NJ who got red-flagged because he was running against an incumbent mayor in a local election.
There’s people on this board who’d like to be able to petition red flags against neighbors simply because they voted for Trump.
That’s where all these good-intentions laws always go - they start out as noble and obvious common sense ideas - but they always devolve into petty torments and abuses for people with grudges against others.
I'm sorry, but America is a MESS right now and I see ZERO chance that Red Flag laws will ever be aggressively implemented enough for them to SAVE LIVES NOW
We need a Blunt tool for Now: Just Ban the Assault Weapons, start a buy back program for 90 days, then implement felony charges- it worked like a charm in a macho country like Australia
At the same time, implement Red Flag Laws - but on Hand Guns
Came here to say just that. Red flag laws only work red flag laws assumes potential perpetrators are surrounded with “good people”. Most are just as messed up. JUST BAN ASSULT RIFLES.

I do, if they’re the only ones with a gun.
If an ordinary citizen can’t have a gun, then no one else should be able to either. Not security guards. Not cops. And most definitely not the body guards of politicians who want to ban guns.
