I know some parents are advocating for school walkouts on another thread, but parents (particularly of middle school and high school students) should just email their school principals to inform them that going forward, their children will not be masking in school, in compliance with CDC recommendations and the mayor's own directive for much higher-risk adults. Then tell your kids to take off their masks. I actually have consulted a lawyer and parents would have a decent case against a school system for arbitrary and capricious behavior here, given that higher risk populations are now allowed indoors without masks, that transmission rates are low and vaccination rates high, and that this is a medical intervention with documented ill side-effects for children's education.

Don't send them with a mask. If the school insists, and gives them one, have your kid (if he or she is comfortable engaging in legit and necessary civil disobedience) to put the mask on but pull it below their face. We need resistance, otherwise the minority of scaredy-cat forever COVID people in DC will keep our kids masked in perpetuity.

Have you seen the ESSER $$$ DCPS is receiving. Is their application public? See what boxes they checked.

An unpaid scientist compiled the data (which no one cares about for some readon) on masking.
A job the CDC or NIH should have done.

This is what I've told my kids (7th, 10th and 12th grades) and from what I've heard, it already seems to be happening. Parents who believe that kids are masking all day at school are kidding themselves.

Unfortunately, this kind of civil disobedience is much harder to pull off for kids in elementary schools and daycares.

A lawsuit would be a waste of time. There are enough arguments in favor of masking in schools that continuing to require them is unlikely to be found arbitrary, capricious or an abuse of discretion. I think it’s unlikely DC will give up masks this school year. Schools are Petri dishes of the highest order and have plenty of people, including staff and teachers, who are at high risk of serious illness or death, even with omicron.

Well lawsuits are already being filed by private school parents. I hope they win!

Bowser and Nesbitt are a joke. Always leading from behind.

I also hope they succeed, and it will be the first time ever that I'll be grateful we have a conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

Are kids masking appropriately to prevent the spread of omicron? I teach in NOVA and I have 4 that I think actually mask well. People who want to or need to mask can absolutely wear a medical grade mask. Ending mandates gives people a choice. My students were able to go mask free today and more than half did so, but those students weren't masking well anyhow so its not a huge change.

Considering - I used to love following her and all her info about DC schools and I actually stopped following her because she got to be too much - that is a high percentage for no masks when taking her followers into account.

Nauseating. SO sick of this and always being the last in the nation to do anything reasonable.

OK, but... that doesn't mean anything? The whole point of that tweet is that the Council would like to have a conversation with OSSE about the mask mandate (which is actually process) and Silverman is saying we should be proactive about the issue. Her complaint is that previously Bowser has lifted mandates with no warning whatsoever, and that leads to a lot of conflict people individuals and institutions have to change course very quickly.

So actually this sounds good to me -- the Council talks to OSSE about maybe lifting or at least altering the mandate (perhaps to allow unmasking outdoors), then they place public pressure on Bowser to do it, and then when it happens people don't feel blindsided.

There's also the possibility that Bowser's office, which is notoriously bad at communicating, will say "no planned change" right up until the day they announce they are getting rid of the mandate altogether, abruptly.

Basically this tweet doesn't actually tell us where Bowser, or Nesbitt, or OSSE, or even Elissa Silverman (the person actually quoted) stands on the school mask mandate. It just lets us know that at least one council member is thinking about the mandate and interested in maybe discussing changes to it.

Unless you live in a cave without internet access, you should be aware that mask mandates are being lifted everywhere. At this point, even if it were lifted tomorrow with a week's notice, it would not be abrupt, and if anyone's response is "this is the first time this has occurred to me and I am blindsided and my institution is unprepared", then they are bad at their job.
