Wait a minute. They don’t have SROs anymore, so their only option when they need police now is to call them, right? So, isn’t it obvious that they will call police more now than when they had SROs? I’m confused why you think this statistic means anything.

Lol besides returning to full time in person education after a year and a half of virtual/hybrid? You really don't get what that experience was like for a lot of kids.

Absolutely I do. Even more reason NOT to remove SROs this year. I know that SROs were removed this year after many years of supporting high schools and despite requests from principals not to do so. Top it off with the fact that they didn't hire the mental health workers that they promised and assumed would be effective in taking their place. Frankly I'm shocked at the incompetence.

All those airport and airplane assaults. What else has changed this year?

Elrich is such a moron. Why the hell would they remove SROs knowing that MCPS hasn't hired enough mental health workers yet. Pathetic how the he and council members are absolving themselves from this and are trying to point at mcps inability to hire counselors.

He cares about reelection not people. He showed that with Covid.

Actually, he really cares about people. My friend works in his office, and I've gotten to know him personally. He really wants good things for everyone. But, like Tim Kaine in that VP debate, sometimes his interface isn't the best. He strikes me as a real person, not a glossy politician.I've also seen him lose it at a town hall (was PTA board of a school, so it was a PTA thing, and a BOE member threw him some shade, and he was not taking it). I was like, yeah, real person response there!

I've met him a few times. I don't dislike him as a person, but I find his policies and management are quite poor.

His behavior during covid has been very disappointing at best. And, the lack of school security is pathetic. 48 assaults and we weren't even aware of many of them. Shameful.

Yeah ok. We believe you

Huh? This is information from the kids. I have one at Blair. We need to understand what/why/how things happened before thinking of solutions, right?

When I was a kid here in the 80s, we didn't have anything like this. Sure, there was an incident once in a while but nothing major, but kids did pull the fire alarm to get out of class almost weekly.

I remember several incidents happening in high school.

They still have security on staff, but they are not SROs.

Very limited. They didn't replace the SRO's with security guards or even mental health workers, so now there is less, not more.

Do you actually live in MoCo? You don't even know what's going in MCPS.
They didn't replace SROs with security guards, there were always security guards at schools; the SRO program was created to complement the guards after columbine.
They are just useless for the most part except for harassing and roughing minorities.

Yes and most schools only have a few security guards and it’s not enough. They are not just there to target minorities. We’ve had multiple serious incidents so what is your solution.

Unfortunately, there are bad cops. Doesn't mean we should get rid of all cops. Also, if your son was threatened by someone with a knife, would you call a cop or not because he freezes up if a cop comes near him?

It definitely means we should get rid of bad cops, but it is apparently nearly impossible to do that. As the saying goes, "One bad apple spoils the whole barrel."

As for calling the cops for help - you may or may not be aware that many people who called the cops for help instead received harm from the cops who are sworn to serve and protect.

No, "many" people are not hurt by cops. Keep talking like that and people stop calling the police. In 2019, the last normal year, there were over 211,000 times police were dispatched for service. Out of those, there were 50 complaints about use of force. 50.

Where did you get the 50 number? From the county's internal affairs dataset it appears there are typically between 400-500 complaints of misconduct by MCPD officers per year, of which about 20 are coded as "use of force". From the most recent Use of Force report, in 2019, there were 211,000 calls for service and 550 use of force reports generated.

FYI, when people get harassed by police, they don't always call up the police and say hey, I was harassed.

Yes. This. My friend was harassed because he was filming the police bullying another person. They yelled eat him, but fortunately others were present and also filming, so there was a limit. I personally think many officers are wonderful, caring people. I also think there are a few "bad apples" trying to feel more powerful at the expense of others. But, most importantly, there seems to be a police culture that negates "protect and serve" and seems more like "elicit compliance and dominate." It's important to insulate kids from that as well as educate officers on it.
