I don't like Paisley but I don't think it's pretentious. It sounds like a rodeo name. Place names always grate IMO -- I'd throw Berkeley in with Brooklyn, London, and Paris and annoying but not necessarily pretentious.

To me, a pretentious name needs to sound like someone is trying to appear wealthy or high class, and neither of these names fit that bill.

It is related to a tween game in the 80s. There were all sorts of word games that ended up discovering your stripper name. Example: What was the name of your first pet? Pepper. Was is you favorite car? Mercedes. Your stripper name is: Pepper Mercedes. Other questions were name of your street, favorite flower, favorite drink, etc. etc.

Is Penny pretentious? Right now Penelope nn Penny is at the top of our list (after an old family friend of mine who was like a grandmother to me when I was a girl). It feels like a good mix since Penelope is more formal and could be used professionally later in life but Penny feels bright and unassuming to us, the opposite of pretentious.

Just surprised to see it mentioned in this thread and wondering why!


The name Penny is terrible. Use the nickname Nellie instead.


Vastly prefer Penny to Nellie. Neither are pretentious.
