If it really is just very scummy and attracts a lot of mosquitoes, then why bother especially with climate change. Turn it into something else. Not worth the money and trouble. Make it a monument to the Constitution and include a large replica of the Bill of Rights (everything this administration is against).

Dark color = heat = more algae as well.

Dunning-Kruger effect in action.

Even if you like Trump, you can't possibly think using millions of dollars to paint a pool. Is a good use of money.
Come on! So much money used inefficiently by this administration.

No one has solved the problem in 100 years of trying, so I'm curious what your solution is

It really wasn’t a particularly big problem. Certainly not such a problem that it should become the centerpiece of an administration.

The blue sealant exacerabted the problem by 1) making the algae more visible and 2) preventing the natural porousity of the pool floor, thus locking the water in and super-heating it. And anyone who knows how these things work, knew that when the plans were announces (as evidenced by social media posts from the time)

Algae blooms have been an ongoing problem, like PP suggested. The sealant and/or its installation/maintenance appear to have issues, but the linked CNN article also has an interesting discussion of the (newly replaced) expansion joints, which bring additional complexity to the project. It’s been a thorny challenge even when more time and money is spent:

”The last time Sika worked on the reflecting pool was in 2012, when President Barack Obama’s administration spent $34 million on an 18-month renovation of the pool which was meant to address ongoing issues with algae blooms. However, shortly after that renovation was completed, the pool again became a murky, smelly mess. That apparent failure to adequately address the issues with the pool became political fodder for Trump when he ordered his own renovation.”

Maybe there isn't one. Maybe that's okay. Maybe the moron in charge shouldn't have built his summer political agenda around it.
