I hate to bash a team like Lightridge. They do have some good players and are an up and coming team.
However:
The 7-0 in VEL was in the "C" league against the likes of:
Dominion/ Heritage - a combined team; made up of two class 4's that are not that good to being with
Potomac Falls - a bottom class 5 team and have been for many years, traditionally finish last in the Loudoun Class 5 division
TrinityChristian/ Tho Jefferson- again a combined team; of two also ran programs
Fairfax - who lost by 10 to a good CLASS 4 team last year
McLean/ Alexandria combined team who many are predicting to be very down this year
They beat a Yorktown team that has a ton of hype, but also has serious holes in an off season winter league while missing players.
The question was- "Are they a contender?" I assume that this is for a state title in Class 5. The answer is a no
They need to get past Riverside, Stone Bridge in their own division. No happening this year.
They may finish between 3-5 with Freedom, Briar and them and could even fall to 6 with Champe in there too.
They will have a good season, yes, but secure a top two spot to region to make the state tournament and be a "contender", no.
As for the other poster, yes, the same teams are generally good year to year its a product of the system. Begin to beat those perennial teams in the regular season or even be close, win district playoff games and then region games and make it to the state tournament and you give yourself a shot. Lightridge has done none of that at this point.
