I emailed the teacher, who sent me to the principal. Principal walked me through the criteria in general and told me where my kid ranked on each of those points.

I reached out to the teacher who confirmed that there were changes but she said that things kept changing and if I wanted more information to speak to the principal. I then reached out to the principal who spoke with me on the phone.

Does anyone know when current 3rd graders will find out whether they will be in compacted next year? I think they said June, but my assumption is it will be after the school year so that current teachers aren't bothered (though admin will certainly have to field complaints).

My child was only at the 75th percentile for Map-M. The principal did not tell me the cut-off but explained that the lower percentage shows that there is room for growth for my child and that the grade-level curriculum would be more appropriate. I was told that if he works hard next year and is able to raise his Map score, he would still be considered for an advanced class in middle school. This all made sense to me.


Depending on the MS, some are very flexible. Ours is.

I think some of it has to do with pure numbers in a class vs. percentile that people here like to think. Our school had one out of 3 classes compacted math. They kept about equal numbers in the classes so it was automatic for high scoring kids and then they left a few parent demand compacted math kids. They cannot have 40 kids in one class and 15 in another.

This is also another reality that a lot of people don't think of. Explains a lot the potential for variability. Thanks for sharing.

One person's grousing is another person's keeping other people informed about potential detrimental changes the BOE might make without anyone knowing.

A more complete answer would include that "grousing" is mostly in the delivery.
