Not sad at all, if it works for you and your family. We do a few celebrations a bit different than many, because... well we like it better our way.

I think this is like the posts on Mother's Day - if you have a great marriage then getting your own cake isn't an issue. If you have a crappy marriage then having to buy your own cake is just one more thing your spouse doesn't do for you and it stings.

I’m divorced and my kids are off at college (and not great planners). Of course I buy my own presents, or birthday cake, stocking stuffers, or whatever else I would like. Should I really rather sit around and feel bad that no one is doing these things for me???

We are living in a pandemic of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, this trend of celebrating with cake and booze needs to end.

I don't think it's strange. My husband does get my birthday cake every year but it's from an inconvenient place so he handles the whole thing because it's a hassle. But if you're placing the HT order anyway and add the cake, I don't think that's an issue. Sounds like maybe she was projecting or is insecure.

I don't understand the psychology of this. First off, he should know what cake you like without asking. Second off, fine, he didn't know and specifically asked you. YOU specifically told him. And yet, he still went and bought the wrong thing. If my DH told me what cake he wanted, I would get that cake. Like, I don't get how you get the cake wrong?
