I thought a $15K sedan several years ago, put maybe $1,000 down and my car payment was under $200 a month. I currently drive a luxury brand SUV and my payment is $350. If he can afford thousands of dollars on uber, he could easily afford a car payment.

He has a drug problem not an Uber problem. No one in their right mind spends $140/day on transportation to a job. Assuming he works 5 days a week that’s $720/week and $2880/month. Tell him to trade in the broken truck and buy a Kia or Hyundai.

The fact that you had that food on hand is another completely different issue but not subject of this post.

Yes. This is so insane. Does he realize he can finance a car for $300 a month? Even with a limited credit history -- thats what I did when I was his age.

He doesn't have any money. He's 26 and only just got kicked off our health insurance.

I’d offer to loan him money to buy a used car without financing at the dealer, if at all possible. He probably is too young to rent a vehicle unfortunately. Hope things get better!

not OP, but Dad is alive and the truck is dead. The Dad gave his old vehicle to the son when he didn't need it anymore.

Sometimes people use the word "inherited" figuratively to describe a situation like this. I don't know how common it is, but it's not entirely uncommon.
