The answer is hypergamy. Women are hypergamous because their reproductive opportunities are far more limited than men's due to the basic fact that women carry the child for nine months and then usually lack fertility in the first year when they breast feed.

Evolution rewarded hypergamous women. While the evolutionary forces that shaped women have vanished, their effects remain. Indeed, most cultures for thousands of years have not let evolution affect women and have dictated outcomes for women.

So women want the best man because evolution made them so. It's just the way it is.

Many of them really don't want to be married.

My best friend separated from her ex dh for cheating. He got a divorce and asked the AP to marry him, she said no and dumped him - she was just having fun with a stupid guy.

OP, I don't agree with your premise. Many won't agree with your premise. "Partnered" though isn't married. Partnered is available if a person who is a better match comes into their life.

There are no starts as people tend to hide these behaviors. There is evidence though that men tend to cheat with those they are already familiar with, someone from their work or household circle. If you surround yourself with married couples that’s not a guarantee that your husband won’t cheat on you. How come it’s not obvious ? When both are married, the arrangement is more stable. Neither party is interested in blowing it off without other party consent. People tend to date and sleep with the likes.

It would be impossible to get true statistics on this as people are likely to hide such behaviors. May be soon AI would be able to collect data from people's phones, searches, driving records, traveling logs, publuc cameras, etc.
