American cars charge phones when the engine is off. That is worth its weight in gold.

FWIW, I drive the Lexus NX300.

This is stupid and untrue. McLean loaded with Jeeps of all kinds and Broncos of all kinds. Also lots of pick up trucks in McLean as third or Fourth car.
+1 Plenty of Ford F150’s. I see GMs in McLean neighborhood, too.
+1 Equinox, Silverado, Encore, Malibu, Corvette, etc.

You are seeing Chevy Malibus in McLean????

This. Assembling it in the US is more relevant to me than where the brand is headquartered.

Meanwhile, all the US-HQ brands import parts, and many assemble outside the US. For example, a ton of Chevys are assembled in Mexico and imported to the US.

Apple. Designed in California. Made where?

HQ jobs research and innovate and manage global operations. They are the highest paid jobs and support their local economies. Profits repatriate to the HQ's country. Healthy companies create healthy domestic stock markets. That is why China seeks to copy all of our US tech businesses. It's why Japan's government doesn't want to let Nissan or even Mitsubishi fail.

Domestic auto companies are also part of the security infrastructure for a nation. Manufacturing know-how and facilities can be repurposed. GM and Ford helped to make ventilators during the Covid crisis.

Spend your money how it suits you, but how you spend it matters more than you think. There are lots of products for which I'd pay double or more to get the quality and durability that used to be produced in the US. Due to supply chain globalization, I no longer have the option.

I'd also like to point out that, as neighbors, we have more of a common interest in building up Canadian and Mexican trade.

We want cars that will last a long time, that wasn't my experience with American cars in the 2000s.

I live in the Detroit area and naturally you see a lot of Tahoes and Expeditions. But more non GM, Ford, and Chrysler than you think. With all the layoffs and cars by them being built in Mexico, plenty of people are not interested in helping the home team. Our house is a BMW and a Ford.

DP. I have elementary aged kids and I know zero people with those cars. The families with three kids virtually all have Siennas.

Sounds like you live in an Asian/Indian enclave.

Nope. Silver Spring.
