What? I have not heard of this. I was under the impression all kids 3-10 take CAPE and you only don’t have to take math CAPE if you are past Algebra II.
This is totally ridiculous. So even less objective data on how our kids are doing?
Yes, high school math CAPE scores are a poor indication of school performance.
From the 2024-2025 CAPE file data notes: "The required high school assessments are Algebra I, Geometry, English I, and English II. For students who take Geometry prior to high school, the required high school mathematics assessment is Algebra II."
So then the Algebra II scores are really the 9th graders taking Algebra II which means there is none in this category at McKinley
I think that's the answer. But, I think as more middle schools offer Geometry that could change because then there would be 9th graders taking Algebra II.
Or, I suppose, if someone transferred in for 10th grade from a different state so hadn't taken a CAPE in high school yet...
There is no DCPS middle school that I know of that actually has a geometry class of 8th graders. None. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Don't mind if I do! Have a look at the Middle School Advanced Math spreadsheet and you will see which schools had kids taking the Geometry CAPE. The list from last year is Hardy, Oyster-Adams, Deal, Eliot-Hine, Sousa, Jefferson, CHEC middle, and both Latins. So you see, it is not really rare. Offerings can change from year to year but I expect this list will grow as it's clearly a goal for a lot of schools.
How many kids taking it in the EOTP middle schools? A few or handful is not a class offering.
I don't know, I don't think that information is public. I can see that it says "DS" (data suppressed) for Hardy, Deal, Eliot-Hine, and the Latins. It says
"n<10" for Oyster-Adams, Sousa, Jefferson, and CHEC middle. So maybe that means the "DS" schools had 10 or more.
But also, what matters to me is that my kid be able to take it, and I don't really care how large the class is. It's probably a better learning experience with 8-10 kids rather than 20-25. It would be lovely if lots of kids were able to do it, but a school like ITDS that only has 40-some 8th graders total isn't realistically going to have more than a handful.

I’m the PP and was asking about DCPS middle schools EOTP specifically. Which ones have a large enough cohort of higher performing 8th graders to actually have a geometry class?

Those taking Geometry in 9th have the option of doubling up on Alg 2 and Pre-Calc in 10th, or taking an extra elective.
