I'm not sure why this decision feels so difficult. In terms of prestige, UVA is the clear winner over UGA. Having lived in both California and New York, I can say that UVA has a strong reputation in both regions. As one commenter mentioned, it’s often grouped with other top public universities like UCLA, Berkeley, and Michigan.

UGA, on the other hand, is more closely associated with football and its Southern identity, which happens to be particularly popular right now. Of course, the quality of education depends on many factors, but UVA is widely recognized as one of the top public universities.

I’d have no problem sending my child to either school, but if I wanted to win the "parent bragging" contest, UVA would be the clear choice. That said, I doubt either school would significantly impact a child's ultimate success, unless one has a notably stronger program or better connections in their area of interest.

Reputation is difficult to measure and subjective. Reputations also evolve. Parents remember that in the 90’s UVA was a harder admit. That has changed and UGA’s profile is closer to UVA now, especially OOS. Gen Z will probably think UGA has a reputation similar to UVA.

UVA is a harder admit for most GA kids than UGaA (partly because of the OOS thing). However, UGA is catching up when it comes to the incoming students’ academic profiles.

I was easily able to work in research labs. The honors program helped me.

I’m PP. I actually live in Fairfield County…think Greenwich, Darien, Westport, New Canaan. I know several who have attended UVA from my area and they have done very well for themselves. It’s a well regarded school. And, yes, I’m quite familiar with New Haven and Cambridge. It’s not all about Yale and Harvard. Good grief.

I'm from Georgia and went to UGA. I think UVA is still seen as a good bit more prestigious in my opinion. The kids who get into Virginia from here are very impressive.

UGA has gained a lot of prestige because of many reasons: the business school, law school, honors college, vet school, the new medical school in Athens and the vast amount of scientific research. I was in the art school, which is also highly ranked currently.

NP - Not a UVA booster but it is obvious that UVA has the better national reputation. I say this as someone who went to school in Georgia and now lives in NYC.

There are multiple posters on this thread saying there isn’t much difference in academic reputation. They’re both top flagships. Move on.

I think there isn't a significant difference academically, especially if you are OOS. The real difference in environment. UVA and Charlottesville are much smaller than UGA and Athens. Some kids prefer the smaller school and town and others want the quintessential college town experience.
