The rule of thumb has always been to assume max locality pay for a GS1 + GS15 = $36,649 + $191,900 = $228,549.00.

Alas, at an HHI of $228K in DMV…you’re squarely in the middle class. No need to ever ask again. Just check the most recently published tables.

Wife and I make approximately 190k a year in Montgomery County Maryland

We rent a small townhome/condo in a very working class neighborhood, where alot of the residents are also renting. We can easily afford more, but rather spend it on going out to eat, and taking trips. Saving for a baby, or a house, which ever comes first. We do not have debt.

I would say this for the NOVA area

If you can afford to buy a condo - townhouse in todays market at todays rates ( middle class)


If you can afford to buy a SFH, youre probably probably arent middle class anymore.
If you can affor a single family home right

I used to be a professor, and once went out on a very large boat (not quite a yacht, but close) owned by some friends. They met up with a couple of other boaters in even bigger, more impressive boats. One was a carpenter and house painter, and the other was a plumber. They owned their own businesses, of course. But still, I felt out-classed (and out-smarted) in spite of my illustrious degrees. I was too busy paying back my ridiculous student loans to even buy a new car.


First, before judging people's class, learn how to post correctly so your responses don't get lost as part of someone else's post.

Second, this is pure cope. A successful business owner, even in a blue-collar industry, is in a higher class than a heavily-indebted professor struggling to get by. You probably mean that the professor listens to NPR and once visited some ancient Roman aqueducts on vacation, but I'm sorry to inform you that having a lot of money is a more important determinant of one's class.

NOVA is also large. We live in McLean so Rockville is less expensive but Rockville would probably be comparable to Alexandria.

Pp with no kids doesn’t have to worry about school districts, private school tuition, nanny, etc. My BIL rented a place in Bethesda as a single and had no real expenses. His only expense were dates and travel. Very different than his brother with 50k tuition, nanny, housekeeper, WIFE.

Tuition and housekeeper and completely unnecessary. You buy in a good school district and you got tuition covered. Don’t buy a 4k sq ft McMansion and you don’t need a housekeeper. The wife is the bigger drainer of expenses lol I agree, women be shopping

You feel wealthy on 390k because you don't have kids!


Unless you have like 10 kids, 390K is definitely "comfortable." Call it middle or upper middle, but it's comfortable. Or it should be.

This thread is insane. We make about 200-250K on a good year, and we are definitely middle class. We live in a middle class neighborhood, in a middle class home, and our one child goes to one of FCPS's "OK" schools. We can afford in-state tuition for college, but that's it.
We aren't rich, and we aren't poor. That's middle.
