In evangelical churches this would be absolutely ok!

I truly have never heard this and I grew up going to mass every single Sunday and going to Catechism. To be fair though we had breakfast before 9 and mass was at 10, so there wouldn't be a meal between that and mass.

So I think OP got the answer (and I’m shocked how many Catholics didn’t know you need to fast 1 hour before mass) but I want to add that during Covid I drank coffee while we watched mass on TV every Sunday and it was lovely. Obviously doesn’t work any more but I miss it!

I think that person means that since there are about 30 minutes of mass before communion, the "hour before communion" means "30 minutes before mass" and then the first 30 minutes of mass.

Not that the church holds communion, waits 30 minutes and then has mass.

Prior to Vatican 2 it was the whole day before Mass which was why morning weddings were so popular for Catholics. I was taught the currrent rule is 1 hour before receiving communion. If you’re not receiving, then it doesn’t really matter but agree that it might raise some eyebrows. Lots of people drink water now though—I’m from a hot climate and it would be a bad idea for the elderly parishioners to not have water for the whole mass.

I go to an Episcopal Church - no drinks in the naive. Definitely in the common areas after. Maybe some wine if it's an evening service.

Nobody drinks coffee at our Episcopal Church until after. Or before, who knows. But definitely never during. So crass and disrespectful.

Many years ago there was a 24-hour CVS across the street from our Episcopal church. I was at midnight mass with many hours ahead of me of Christmas Eve dinner cleanup, Christmas morning breakfast setup, and Santa present stocking stuffers. I got communion but since the church was packed I knew it would take 15-20 minutes for communion to be over, so I snuck out to grab a Diet Coke and snuck back in.

Agree -- no coffee at Mass. You can make it. Just get up a little earlier and have a cup at home.
