The virtue of a big county and big school system is to be able to spread things around a bit for the greater good. FCC formed because of its desire to avoid black people and they pretty well have succeeded.
How predictable. As has been stated repeatedly, McLean (and Great Falls) residents have been footing the bulk of the bill for renovations, new buildings, and expansions in schools across FCPS - for DECADES. McLean needs an addition, and has for some time , but the SB chooses to ignore this in favor of “equity.” Enough is enough.
it's just a coincidence that you'd have one of the whitest school systems in the area if McLean broke off. Also one of the most segregated with Langley having TJ numbers of URMs and McLean approaching 20%. I guess if you drew the boundaries carefully enough, you could make McLean just as 'good' as Langley
You ask for evidence that McLean/GF schools haven't been well served by FCPS, and then when it's provided you pivot and complain about what the demographics of separate school system that includes Langley, McLean, and their feeders would look like. I don't think that sputter fest is going to get you very far. People are fed up.

As usual, the people who want everyone to be brought down instead of up will resort to accusations of “racism.” Utter morons.
you probably want a better answer when it comes before a local governments commission and then before a special state court (both of which have to happen for city status) because it's going to be brought up by opponents
Who would oppose this?
is it really a valid argument to say "we don't want them to go because we want their money"....?
do you really think that people won't bring up segregation?
It really is about money, right? VA and FC have poured tax incentives into Tysons, Beltway expansion, Metro expansion out to Tysons and Silver Line - hard to believe that the state or county would walk away from those investments and give up the tax base they have built.

Anonymous wrote:Serious question - what benefits does the state or Fairfax County get from cities incorporating? I assume the statutory moratorium was in place to protect tax bases, etc.?
It looks like Falls Church was incorporated in the late 1940's and Fairfax City in 1960s. Are there more recent examples?

His party relies heavily on URM votes. Do you really think he'll support the lilly white rich enclave abandoning Fairfax County resulting in funding cuts for poorer schools?
Who knows who has his ear? He probably cares what happens with Tysons. It’s going to hurt the state if there’s an ongoing battle with those living north of Tysons complaining that the local schools are underfunded and that they are being held hostage by others in the county who just want their money. For sure it won’t help attract business to the region.
Other than a couple on this thread, there isn't anyone saying that and there isn't an "ongoing" battle.
How can the local schools of Langley and McLean be underfunded when Langley was just renovated? These McLean people sound nutty.
Langley was built in 1965 and never had a renovation. It patiently waited its turn and finally received a much-needed reno. It didn’t receive any special treatment, if that’s what you’re implying. McLean is grossly overcrowded and the SB has known this for years. They desperately need an addition, but there is nothing in the works - even after years of discussion. I imagine you’d be pissed off if you had to send your kids to an overcrowded school while watching other schools (W.Potomac) get expansions they don’t even need.
Cooper is also in the middle of a renovation that was delayed over and over again. I went to Cooper and am almost 50 years old. The school looks exactly the same for my DS as it did for me.

I didn't say Langley got special treatment. But it didn't get bad treatment. It's all just normal treatment. But that's not enough...
