My sister lives in Israel. Many of her friends are quarantined. South Korean tourists brought the virus there. I'd consider canceling.

Duh!
Have you been to Rome/Paris/Barcelona? I guess not.

What's wrong with just being home or in the area one year?? Absolutely not the end of the world. Not asking to hide in a bunker but darn it just stay still!!)

My situation:

A friend of mine had spouse die. Unexpectedly.
Friend is struggling with it
I planned to go visit in Australia ages ago

Do I cancel on a close friend and bail?
Do I go because, frankly, the odds of getting sick are pretty low?

WWYD?

I would go. Your chances of getting it are low. Australia has a good health care system is you do get sick.

You’ll change your tune if you get sick overseas. Good luck finding your comfort foods over there.

It’s bloody France, not Tajikistan.

Yep and if you ever live overseas long enough - you'll learn that there's nothing like your country's cooking. It's also more expensive to buy food on the Euro, not to mention being hospitalized in a country whose language you don't speak is a bitch.

Cancel. Not even a question.

Asking seriously: how do I tell someone who is genuinely struggling with their loss this?

You be honest. “With the coronavirus I’m not comfortable traveling right now. I will reschedule the trip when things calm down.”

I hear ya. Feels cold and clinical. But I hear you.
