So the notification of screening pool and cogat test are sent separately?

I received notification that we're in the screening pool. Teacher knew scored and told us "unofficially" that our son had scored 145+ on NAg and Cogat.

I received CogAt scores today but no pool information. Is it sent separately? Has anyone in GF received pool information?

No, it is the same date for everyone. Last year it was listed on the FCPS website.

I seem to recall -- but I'm honestly not certain if this is correct -- that the deadline to submit the parent questionnaire and other materials is set by the school (and perhaps the AART at the school) vs. the central office. (I looked for a deadline on the FCPS website and I could not find it either.)

The January 14, 2011 deadline for appeals is for SPRING 2011 AP Center placement.

Because the deadline for appeal is 14 Jan 2011, I would think FFX should at least give a week for parents to response. This means FFX should let parents know the test scores by Saturday. It does seem strange this year. any thought?

We have not got anything in the mail yet, but friends in Reston got a letter saying that the child is in the pool. No scores. Wonder if FCPS is trying something different this year?

I agree that some of the AARTs do a far better job than others in communicating and explaining the details. It seems to me that so much of this is the luck of the draw. Not that much different from what schools are more invested in extra-curricula academic activities such as FIRST LEGO League, math competitions, Odyssey of the Mind, etc.

The cut-offs are based on 2 standard deviations above the mean. This is true for the tests administered in FCPS (NNAT and CogAT), as well as for the WISC. Because the pool of kids being tested changes every year, the mean changes a little each year, too (and hence the SD gets shifted accordingly). So in one sense, it is not arbitrary -- it is based on a rule of thumb that +2 SDs means a child is automatically put in the pool. OTOH, there is still the issue that a 129 is not meaningfully different from a 131 from a psychometric perspective -- in that regard, however, one could argue that ANY cut score is arbitrary.

Note, however, that the cut-off merely determines AUTOMATIC PLACEMENT IN THE POOL. A kid with a 140 would make it to the pool, but might still not be deemed center-eligible. Likewise, a child who scored below the cut-off can still be placed in the pool, based on additional evidence (teacher recs, academic performance, etc.). My own experience was that the resource person at our school did an abysmal job explaining these details. I think they like to run a covert operation.
