From the article this looks really bad and would seem to put St. John’s status at risk. Had to understand how the board of the school doesn’t put a stop to the baseball and soccer coaches’ behavior. Even if what they are doing doesn’t violate any rules, and it is hard for me to believe that is the case if it is as described, this is a really bad look for a Purportedly religious, educational institution.

2/25/2020

Sal Caccavale was selected as the Boys’ Soccer Coach of the Year for the Mideast Section, which includes the District of Columbia, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. In the fall of 2018, St. John’s boys’ soccer team won the DCSAA championship, the program’s first title since 1986.

Mark Gibbs was selected as the District of Columbia Baseball Coach of the Year. Last spring, the Cadets won the WCAC regular season title for the eighth consecutive season and the WCAC tournament title for the sixth consecutive season. The team then went on to win the DCSAA championship.

I think this illustrates exactly where Gibbs goes off the rails.

When Gibbs doesn't let kids play in National Showcases during the offseason (I think that was a major factor for the 5 kids who just left) or tells kids to not go to winter college camps (but they can go to his own camps), or withholds information from parents and kids about a college showing interest in a kid, he illustrates that he's not interested in helping the kids reach their objectives.

The only possible conclusion you can reach when he does these things is that he's more interested in maintaining control over the kids for the benefit of his own program.

As a coach or teacher, that level of selfishness is just disgraceful.


Happy to report that all 5 kids who were tossed from the program for not lining the pockets of the head baseball coach are now committed to D1 programs. Good for them!

Specious argument, at best. WCAC has been asleep at the wheel for various reasons so big, bad SJC has taken advantage and is running roughshod while the other member schools sit idly by. Sounds good. Good talk.

FOLLOW THE MONEY


WCAC has only a part time commissioner and he's got a busy full time job with Alexandria Public Schools. Prior to him, the job was vacant for 18 months and prior to that it was well known that the rules were treated as suggestions. Rules have never been followed in the WCAC. Why get ethical now?
