W&M looks pretty at first, but as my DC noted, the buildings look moldy and about to collapse at any moment.

The only thing gritty about UVA is the beach volleyball court.

I think of Temple as gritty. Not really UVA.

Never seen this “Grittiness”. Where exactly do I find it? They have lots of new and newly renovated dorms and of curse the main grounds are in perfect shape for an old school. Not defensive, just curious what is gritty?

The list doesn't have CNU, which is one of the nicer ones. Mary Washington is also quite nice. I've seen all of these and would rank them this way:

W&M - Old campus and central area around the garden lawn are great. Newer areas aren't as good.
UVA - Central grounds around the Lawn are lovely, but other areas aren't really distinguished
CNU - All new buildings are by the same architects and have a consistent classical style. They are new so look well maintained. I think this has been a selling point for them.
Mary Washington - nice, traditional campus
VT- quite nice for such a large school
JMU - well kept with mountain views, but it has an interstate and train tracks running through it as someone commented
VCU - some nice buildings, but the only urban one here so a less traditional campus than the others
GMU - last on this list, but it really isn't a bad campus as some say

personally, I find the campuses with the single architectural style, particularly red brick with white trim, to be monotonous.
