So it was an empty promise, much like "keep your doctor" and "save $2500 in premiums."

We have to go with what we have now - an uncontrolled border by which millions of illegal aliens have and will continue enter our country. The cost to Americans is great, and it's time to at least slow it down. Right now, the population is at least 10% illegal. We can't absorb any more.

How about if Congress just ends the shutdown? Wouldn't that be a whole lot easier?

100% agreed. Congress should approve the money for the wall so this whole sad saga can end.

Hell no. Do not give into toddler tantrums.

That's the problem in a nutshell. The Democrats advocated doe the wall until Trump wanted it. They are so intent on keeping Trump from a "win" that they are willing to keep nearly a million people out of work and make it easier for illegals to come into our country. In the scheme of things, $5B is nothing.

Trump and McConnell.

The House passed the same bill the Senate passed unanimously. Everyone but Trump and McConnell don't want the shutdown.

You mean turtleman is standing up to democrats? I guess hell has frozen over. What gives?

No, 'turtleman' as you put it, is caving to Trump. Why was a clean resolution passed unanimously before Christmas, but not it won't even be brought to the floor? First the GOP controlled House used the 800,000 people and now the GOP Senate is doing it. There is simply no reason for it whatsoever as McConnell bringing it to the floor now would be a vetro-proof vote.

Or that Mexico was already paying for via the unsigned NAFTA2.0

This is start of class warfare on elites.

Yeah, that should go over really well with the MAGA crowd when they can't get their food stamps or tax refunds.

LOL. Maybe they can pawn a gun or two.

Sorry to break it to you, but this is about much more than Feds getting paid. It’s about national security for goodness sake!

You mean when TSA agents aren’t getting paid it’s a national security issue. I agree.

Let them call in sick or walk off the job. We can train enlisted military to run people through body scanners and metal detectors. NBD.

Who is “we”? Who is training thousands of enlisted military for the hundreds of airports across the country? And are those trainers getting paid?

I bet you’re not a logistics specialist are you.

I just read that the pilots' association has called for the TSA and air traffic controllers to be paid. And if you think you can just train some reservists to do these jobs overnight, you are sorely mistaken.

Absolutely you can. The Air Force has its own controllers, you know. Look up the air traffic control strike of the 1980s and see how that worked out.

One, it was a clusterf*ck. And two, the Airforce does not have the ATFs to meet their needs (you know, national security) and operate every airport in this country).

Plus, the job isn’t funded. Whether it is performed by civilians or the military. So no you have unpaid members of the military.

Until October, when funding for the government is due again. And we are right back here with even more unreasonable demands. Sorry. Trump needs to make his case without holding 800k Americans hostage.

Anonymous wrote:^ Not sure it's legal to call out the Guard for a shutdown that is of the government's own making. Doesn't the government then have to put those people on full-time pay? Wouldn't that require that the government pass a bill to pay them?

Why yes. One it’s illegal. Posse comitatis. And two, no money to pay people means no money to pay anyone to perform the function. You can’t just shuffle people around between departments.

Plus, the flying public should absolutely be inconvenienced in a government shutdown. If Americans want 800,000 federal employees to not be paid for work they are performing, they should live with the consequences. If they disagree with Trump on this, they should tell him.

First. No, we can’t. That’s illegal. Posse comitatus.

Second, it takes years to train air traffic controllers, and they are staging sick outs too.

What are the details of the $5.6 Billion you want to blindly approve? Given that Trump only spent 6% of the $1.6B authorized last year, why not figure out spending the rest of that before authorizing more?

He will need much more than $5.6 billion, that’s just a down payment.
