It's a shame they were robbed at gunpoint with video footage yet people don't believe them.

Being forced to pay for things you broke is not robbery. It's not how the US would've handled things but it's not like they were innocent, well behaved Angels visiting this gas station and feeding the poor and homeless.

Sure, and paying$10k for complaining about it is totally fine, that's just how they do things there.

I agree with her characterization of Lochte, but her ass kissing of Brazil is a bridge too far. It is still a crime infested country where just the other day, an Australian athlete was ordered to take cash out of an ATM during a robbery. Also, in this incident, a nut job security guard DID pull a gun on the swimmers because they were being "violent." Well, they were all sitting in a car, so how violent could they have been? The author downplays this as a slight overreaction. I know that lefties in the media are supposed to show their adoration for every third world country, but get real!

I'm extremely liberal but I agree with you.

I didn't get the ass kissing of Brazil. I got that Lochte's ridiculous behavior has allowed Brazil to focus on this one very high profile fake incident and hide all the other very credible reports of acts of violence committed in Rio during the Olympics. The British athlete who was mugged barely got any coverage because all eyes were on Lochte. Every time someone brings up the green pool, the contaminated water, poor security, poor attendance, camera crews having equipment stolen....Brazil will refocus everything on how things were exaggerated and point to Lochte. Thanks Ryan for your tremendous contribution to the 2016 Olympics

I agree with this. I don't see ant ass kissing in this piece at all. She points out actual robberies and says the games aren't really safe. Reporting that officials are sensitive about these problems and the world's perception of Rio is just a fact. She certainly doesn't ignore or deny that there are problems. THAT would have been ass kissing.

What a joke.

All the Brazilians I've seen posting on various news articles (not representative, I know), are outraged that Americans would trash a bathroom, disbelieve the guard pulling a gun because that would be wrong of him, and think justice was well served by yanking the two off the plane and now requiring a $10k charity donation from Feigen. That's their system of justice and, though they complain about corruption, they are happy with it.

There is no more doubt. I believe Brazil tv footage and even the US OC apologized, which it would not do if there was a chance the 'foursome' had some truth in their story

Or they are doing what they have to do publicly to try and get their swimmers home.

You think the Brazilians meant to keep them there for a long time? No. Brazil may be corrupt, but they are not complete fools. They want to send a message that pulling a "Lochte" will not be tolerated. I think the message was heard. Yes, Brazil has a lot of crime and theft and they have a hard time controlling that. But the last thing they need are people from outside (millionaire Olympic medalists no less) coming to commit more crime and lying and getting away with it. It doesn't sit well with the natives (just as it doesn't and wouldn't here). They had to set the record straight and the US OC understood that and the truth was out there. They never meant to keep them there . . . and the US OC knew that. Lochte crossed a big line that Brazil could not turn away from.

It's a shame you're unable to see how foolish and wrong-headed you are and the entire rational thinking world disagrees with your assessment of what happened.

Sorry but no. I agree with PP. It might be time for you to accept that some people might not share your opinion, and that's okay.

It's okay--you Flat Earthers unite on the planets edge and so on.

The last time I checked, if someone pulls a gun on you and demands money, that is in fact, an armed robbery. If my neighbor destroys my fence, and I pull a gun on him and demand that he pay for it, I'm going to jail. Why aren't the Brazilian police charging the security guards with a crime? Oh, right, it's Brazil. The swimmers were victims of crime and corruption in Brazil. The stories didn't match up perfectly, but the point still stands. As evidenced by the several other Olympians and coaches who have also been robbed in Rio.

People are acting like Lochte made up the entire story but, I believe the "real" story and the "swashbuckler" one are similar enough that it should not have been made into such a huge international incident. All of them were drunk, so surely details were fuzzy, and Lochte sensationalized it. Is that a crime? No. They should've come clean about the vandalism, and not embellished, but they were still robbed.

Enjoy your vacation to Rio, where you pay $10.8k for the privilege of saying publicly that a person in uniform drew a gun on you. An excellent system of justice.

+2. For the millionth time, no one is disputing that Lochte is ALSO an ass. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
