+1. I wonder if we know the same person...
I know a Carrington in his late 40s and he is a lovely person.

Then there's the opposite of pretentious names: childish names that fit a baby or child but not an adult. Kylie, Katie (no full name), Cody, Rylee, Toby, Jake, Evie

what are you talking about?Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:It’s interesting how names can read as trashy or pretentious to different people. Names like Beckett, Ainsley, Remington sound very Teen Mom to me.
I mean, they are Teen Mom trying to be "fancy."
Yeah, actually fancy people name their kids, like, Catherine and John.
non-white people aren't allowed to be fancy I guess

Ridiculous does not equal pretentious.
Generic, Christian names do not equal pretentious.
Pretentious is "expressive of affected, unwarranted, or exaggerated importance, worth, or stature."
You're welcome.
Like the name Penny ?
Is Penny pretentious? Right now Penelope nn Penny is at the top of our list (after an old family friend of mine who was like a grandmother to me when I was a girl). It feels like a good mix since Penelope is more formal and could be used professionally later in life but Penny feels bright and unassuming to us, the opposite of pretentious.
Just surprised to see it mentioned in this thread and wondering why!
