One of the younger grades had a parent meeting tonight. It was basically decided to take a wait-and-see approach to the trip, and to revisit the issue after the current 5th graders return from the trip.

$1799 is a steal comparing to $3500 apiece.

I think it isn't being discussed on the listserv because grade level parents have been meeting in person to discuss it. It makes sense since each grade level has different types of questions to address.

Still interesting that no one has discussed this, pro or con, on the PA listserv. I chuckled when I saw someone list a Groupon offer of a 10-day China tour for only $1799 "for those who cannot afford the China trip".

NP here, would anyone really make their decision about the quality of a school or even the parent culture of a school based on what happens at DCUM? I figure that for every single vocal poster here, there are many who read and don't post, and even more who aren't ere at all. Which means, I wouldn't make any decision about pursuing a particular school for my DC without checking it all out for myself.

Bickering on DCUM, well, at least these parents sound involved!

Mistreatment is very strong language. I can't imagine that any family was actually "mistreated" - maybe their opinions weren't heeded, but out and out mistreatment?

You're right. The mistreatment had nothing to do with wishing to have preferential treatment. As I said, they were extremely generous to YY. One PP basically called me a liar for pointing out this family. If only she knew what the family had done for YY, she'd be so shamed and humiliated. Had they been treated better, they'd have stayed and there was a good chance they would have stepped up in funding the trip for those who can't afford to go.

17:30 here. I don't know anything about the alleged "mistreatment". I do know that at any school, each year, there are some families who feel the school is not the right fit, or have other reasons, and transfer out.

In the case of Yu Ying, a handful of students have transferred each year, many due to family moves, but literally hundreds of students are on the waiting list to get in. I don't believe that any school can be the perfect school for everyone. But clearly, Yu Ying is an excellent school for many kids and parents.

I'm not the PP and I'm not 100% sure who is being referenced, though I have a very strong guess. Being mistreated can come from many angles. If this is the person I believe it to be then none of the mistreatments had anything at all to do with wishing to have preferential treatment. Quite the contrary in fact. What does that actually mean? Somebody hoped that their money was supposed to allow them to choose the teachers or something?

pp, sorry to hear that a family feels mistreated. Not doubting anything you say. I only learned of the trip in August after the start of the school year, so I didn't think anyone had left the school over it.

For whatever its worth, I oppose this trip as well, for all the reasons mentioned in the past 34 pages. But I love Yu Ying. It's been a great school for my kids, and has done some amazing things.

That family mentioned above finally had it after being mistreated several times. They figured they'd go elsewhere where they'd be more welcome AND their generosity would put in better use. Yes the trip has not happened yet (very smart of you to point that out) but it was brought up while they were still at YY. Just because you didn't want to believe this, it didn't mean it didn't happen. They didn't flash their money around and didn't act they are loaded. They were extremely extremely generous to YY though. If you only knew what they had done....

Sadly, PP, the parents seem to making the trip the be all and end all. This thread is a clear sign of that.
