She writes somewhat about specifics, but she blows up those little scenarios and makes them universal.
I’m 46, but when I hear a song about young people’s problems I relate to it.
I was young once too. I remember that feeling.
I have never thought her lyrics were meant to stand up in a court of law. She’s never been under oath.
It’s all pieces and parcels of the truth smudged around to create something else.
And I’ve always found it relatable.
But I’m an umc white lady.
And the middle aged dude from the Post just couldn’t relate at all. He’s never felt like that. Taylor has really illuminated how irritated men get, when their perspective isn’t the default.

Exactly. And for that matter, middle aged and older women who are angry she writes about herself , fame, and relationships- What do they think she should write about? Quick healthy dinners for kids? Carpooling? Small home repairs? How to maximize PTO? What jeans to buy when you know skinny jeans are uncool but refuse to wear wide leg jeans? Be so for real.

I can't stop laughing at this - so perfect

Laugh away- Some of favorite bands did this though. They wrote kids songs/music during their having kids stage. It was better than kids bop and the mindless kids bands.

She can right her love songs but doesn’t need to have specific phrases in them to identify past BF’s.

I am beginning to understand why TS triggers some people.

Dude. Spell it out, cause I’m not understanding. Help a girl out. What is it?

As always, I'm very impressed that she's able to write these complicated, interesting lyrics. But at the same time, it's such a word dump! I love TS but as another poster said, I feel she's really becoming overexposed. How many albums does she need to put out? And the constant revenge/pining theme isn't healthy for young girls to internalize.

I disagree. I’m 48 and only now getting in touch with my rage as a woman. I was taught to be a real people pleaser, always be glass half full, and I stuffed so much inside and I don’t think that’s healthy. Maybe it’s not healthy to go too far the other way, but I think her generation is trying to balance some of that and I appreciate it.

I mean, look at what is happening in our own country with women’s rights. I think it’s OK for girls to internalize some bad stuff, it’s not sunshine and roses.

I’m 47 and Alanis, Tori and Sinead were my musical rage women. I agree that women need to be in touch with their anger, but they also need to learn to speak it, and act on it (not with aggression, but as a sign that their rights/beliefs are being violated in some way). I don’t think Taylor does the second part well. She can point out her rage and then sit on stage in front of her fans giving a glitter sparkle performance in a mask. The singers of our generation were better about being honest about their feelings on and off the stage.

Interesting Tori wrote about boys and breakups u til she was 33.

All three other women you talk about or raped , to them on multiple occasions, one consistently as a child.

Yeah you’re gonna get a little more rage like that.

Sinead was not a popstar. She was a punk rocker who accidentally made one pop song that ruined our life and eventually lead to her demise.

oh and by the way, Alanis Morissette and Tori is love Taylor, Swift, and Alanis Morissette has performed with her

Okay- good for them! I would sing with Taylor if my way of making money was through singing. I guess I rate her trauma of getting dumped while being a billionaire as much much less than getting raped as a young girl. The thing is Tori Amos also dealt beautifully with rebuilding her self after a break up.
“When you gonna make up your mind, when you gonna love you as much as I do?”
Taylor just starts talking about touchdowns and trophies.
Enjoy Taylor, I will be listening to Maggie Roger’s.

I’m starting to understand why a lot of people hate Taylor because they have the inability to read and comprehend.

I’ll be listening to Maggie Rogers and Taylor, Swift and Imelda, May and pink and Billy Joel and Rihanna and Griff and a whole host of other people.

It’s wild you only have the ability to listen to one artist at a time

Silly- why are you drawing that conclusion? Luckily, I read functionally enough to hold a job. To be clear, I don’t purposely listen to Taylor because

1. I was molested as a kid. I have been through lots of therapy and will continue to do that probably for my entire life. I can’t understand the level of pain she feels as an adult when someone rejects her. I just don’t. I work every day to find peace, calm and hope in the minutia of my life as that is truly the only thing that brings contentment. Hearing her blather on about how hard it is to be a billionaire that was broken up with has little resonance with me. I can see she is hurt, so I hope she gets better but as an anthem for my life, I don’t identify.

2. I like to badly sing with along melodies at the top of my lungs in the car. She has a singsong talking thing going on especially with this album, so that doesn’t work for me. I know most of her hits from Kidz Bop.

3. She harkens back to high school in her songs and wants touch downs and trophies. I gave up thinking I needed that for happiness a long time ago. Her take on life is that traditional Americana values are the key to happiness. I’m not there.

4. She needs songs about HOW to heal and gain perspective in her life.

You should really read this post to your therapist.

Not a whole songs are about her by the way.

You’re reading way too much into this and it’s probably because of your abuse to invalidate other peoples journeys.

Whose journey did I invalidate?
Taylor’s? I specifically said “I can see she is hurt, so I hope she gets better but as an anthem for my life, I don’t identify.”

Nobody’s asking you to identify. You clearly identify with people whose past has rape in it.

Reread your third point.

Seriously girl I’m sorry for all your struggles, but you really need to read this to your therapist. I can’t help you on a forum like this.

I usually vet my therapists more than seeing their names as anonymous usernames on line, but thanks so much!

Have fun with the album and think of me if it helps you understand why people don’t like Taylor sometimes!

We don’t care about you!! How did you manage to make Taylor’s new album and our discussion of it about you and your trauma omfg .

Taylor's role isn't to be your therapist. You're not going to find the help you're seeking in pop music. Pay an actual professional to help you.

No you aren’t sorry nor should you be. You can enjoy trophies and her, just know that she isn’t relevant to many in this world. If you are allowing opposing views to exist without denigrating the person behind the views, it is all good.

I guess it is a good thing in some ways that so many adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s still identify so closely with hoping a boy will kiss them under the bleachers or wondering what their crush will say about them in Marry, Kiss, Kill or Spin the Bottle games. And maybe Taylor's biggest stress to date has been that she wasn't picked once by her crush in spin the bottle. Although you, and I and others can't related to this being what life is about in adulthood, it seems that many do and can. I guess that isn't a bad thing - if you can make it into your 30s and 40s without adult responsibilities or life stressors or grief or loss or trauma, that's a lot to be thankful for. For me, it is more nostalgic than that I currently relate. Like Cruel Summer...reminds me of my early 20s. . And my daughter likes her and many of her songs are catchy, so we have fun chatting about her music. But nice try on insulting older women who like her.

Im 60
And I will be playing marry, f, kill at the caps game just to honor crazy tay tay haters. lol!

Some people are so droll.

For me, it is more nostalgic than that I currently relate. Like Cruel Summer...reminds me of my early 20s. . And my daughter likes her and many of her songs are catchy, so we have fun chatting about her music. But nice try on insulting older women who like her.

No you aren’t sorry nor should you be. You can enjoy trophies and her, just know that she isn’t relevant to many in this world. If you are allowing opposing views to exist without denigrating the person behind the views, it is all good.

She's not relevant to many? Wow, that's some deep thinking right there. But she's relevant to you such that you need to listen to her music, study the lyrics, form an opinion and then share it. You care a lot about her.

I don’t care about her personal life. The album is fine for background pop music but the tune and lyrics aren’t sticking with me. I’m sure I’ll be hearing it constantly so maybe it will grow on me.
