It's not odd. It's intentional. Michelle Reid couldn't bring operational competence to bear on FCPS if she wanted to, and she doesn't want to, because it's easier to defend bad decisions if no one has access to current data to challenge them.

Lorton Station has room for Hagel right now. It’s a newer school that was built to be larger. They could take Hagel Circle and be at 99% capacity without any moves out (though I agree that Saratoga should be at Springfield Estates AAP like the rest of the pyramid).

It fits just fine at Gunston as originally intended with scenario 4. Room was made by transferring kids to Island Creek Elementary. Lorton Station elementary does have a larger capacity than Gunston, however, Lorton Station was for many years over capacity with the same exact neighborhoods zoned. It currently serves two large apartment complexes, the Fields at Lorton Station and The Woods of Fairfax. Having Hagel Circle a part of Lorton Station will be a huge problem once more people move into those apartment complexes.

Its not a good solution to the matter.

I am actually in favor of keeping Hagel Circle zoned for Halley Elementary. They have been there for more than 20 years! However, for whatever reason, it was zoned to Gunston and room made for it by the consultants. For "other reasons", there was strong opposition and flimsy excuses made why they shouldn't be part of Gunston. Gunston PTO mentioned the septic issue, and trailers(also needed with Lorton Station) being needed. Another reason mentioned, "students not being together". Currently, South County is the closest school yet Lorton Station is sent far away to Hayfield. Why should Lorton Station always have to be the sacrificial lamb for every problem within the community. Time Lorton Station be able to advocate for things which would favor them!

Unfortunately with the way things are spread out in that area of the county, it isn’t really possible for every kid to attend their physically closest school. Not without giving South County middle and HS some large additions. And even if they did that, they’d be leaving Hayfield quite below capacity. So then we get into the whole, why are we giving a school an expansion to get more kids into it while another school has capacity. It’s another West Potomac expansion scenario when MVHS has capacity.

Yes, Gunston ES is on septic. They have public water but no public sewer.

80 total transferred in, above totals 66 so 14 total came from 7 other schools. At 1 per each of them that leaves 7 kids that could have all been from the same site. IDK.

Objectively, families' voices shouldn't be taken into consideration because they are just a snapshot in time.

If families voices give objective reasons to stay where they are, that is valid.

The problem is that most are giving emotional reasons. That is not valid.

Distance, numbers, etc, should drive the decisions.

The only real caveat I see is IB vs AP. Hard to argue that they are the same.

The social justice warriors (both of them that post here) consistently complain that the school board is listening to families and that the unnecessary changes keep shrinking in size. They don’t want democracy, they want to upset the Apple cart because farms rates are different at some schools. They want to destroy the system first, then have a subpar education for all.

What about moving boundaries based on proximity and available space?

The first steps before any of this should have been Coates, Then AAP in every middle school and eliminaing IB except for one opt in program so that no students go out of boundary for middle school AAP and the poorer performing schools would stop hemmoraging strong students who are escaping IB.

After taking 1 year to accomplish adding AAP middle school issue and eliminating the IB loophole, then do a countywide residency check at any high school still over 105% capacity, before schedules are issued at Open House.

Once the residency check is complete, then FCPS can look at rezoning, only at schools still over 105% after all out of bounds students and non residents are sent back to their base schools, with rezoning limited to a specific order:

1st, split feeders and attendance islands

If more rezoning is needed, fcps can look at the neighborhoods located farthest from the high school/closest to an equivalent quality adjacent school.

The process should be concrete and logical.

Rising seniors, juniors and sophomores should be grandfathered.

Rising freshmen should go to the new high school, even if they are at the secondary schools
