Agree, once mom arrived, situation resolved, they leave. They don't discuss the child's need. Mom is equally to blame but the cops were terrible.

The police should have left once the child was safely in custody of MCPS. Their only job was to help search and retrieve the kid safely. They have gone well above and beyond their scope here, seemingly with the encouragement of MCPS staff.

I agree, can the school tell the cops to leave?

Totally insane. It was so dehumanizing for that child. But why is the family filing a lawsuit when the mom was just as big of a creep as the cops?

Money. I think mom set it up so she could sue.

Mom is just as complicit. Her only reason for not beating her child is fear of going to jail or losing her child to the system. Otherwise, she’s okay with it?

Did the school previously report her to CPS?

Yes, it sounds like she had reports. Mom needs parenting help.

I hope if anything comes from this video is that MANY kids have needs outside of a parent scope and MANY families have needs that they can not financially receive. Lower class or struggling middle class do not have medical insurance. Do not have the money. Do not have the time. Many are truly single parents (no dropping off with other parent on weekends etc...) and many parents have untreated mental health issues as well.

It is just so sad that the top 1% of our society are so disgusting, controlling, and selfish that wages are so low for others. That our government can not see that basic health care and helping people out of poverty are human rights. We look at other countries with severe poverty and controlling governments and think our country has freedom. It is a joke. We are puppets.

Mom talked about spending money like wild fire with Disney and other trips, tons of toys and more. If they are low income they'd qualify for medicaid or other state run health care programs for kids. And, there are free mental health clinics as well. She doesn't want to get her child help.

You’re clueless. I’m not excusing her behavior but it’s very, very difficult to get ongoing mental health services that take insurance. It’s a crisis, honestly.

This exactly. You would be shocked how much I spend out of pocket for mental health care for my SN kid and I have great insurance. $5k along for parent training and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

The stigma of mental health disorders is still overwhelming, in addition to the cost. As tax payers we need to advocate increasing the number of school counselors at all levels, and that may require increasing taxes. One school counselor cannot dedicate the time needed for children such as the boy in the video. It sounds like this boy needs daily, if not hourly check-ins. And a good evaluation by a psychologist and pediatrician.

And just as a side note, mom doesn’t need to leave bruises or cuts to be abusive or reported to CPS. The entire, how do I smack him around without getting arrested angle was a bit disturbing but whooping @ss is acceptable in some subcultures.

Personnel actions, including discipline, are private. LEOBR.

The chief can't fire people because of a collective bargaining provision.

Support Hans Riemer's bill to revamp discipline.

This incident is a perfect example of why government employees’ disciplinary actions and records for serious matters should be public. It is crucial that the public have visibility into how the MCPS and MCPD employees involved were disciplined so that the community can determine whether its government is upholding community standards in a fair and proportionate manner.

I believe the bill you are referring to is co-sponsored by Riemer and Jawando and Jawando wrote it.

It's Riemer's. Jawando liked it and signed on as a co-sponsor.

The video is heartbreaking to watch but SO many issues at play in this situation. The child assaulted a teacher and several classmates and then ran out of the building. They said the other students in the classroom were terrified and had to “take cover” from this child. It seems he has done this several times. Mom does give props to the school, and said her friends in NY can’t believe how patient the teachers are, and likes that they don’t give up on the kids.

Mom seems to need help - she was rambling on about how her son is spoiled and that he is acting like this because he doesn’t get what he wants...also mentioned the child is like this because the father is 60 and too old. This is a family in crisis.

MoCo police were responding to this child like he was a 21 year old adult, not a 5 year old child! It seems the (white) admin were afraid to go against the (black) police and mother. Police officers claim to be old-school and, and how they would have been beaten if they were the child in this situation. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon, and illustrates why there is a need for a SLO officer at each school (including elementary school) THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY TRANED in child development and responding appropriately in a crisis situations. Obviously, the way you respond to a five year old in crisis is much different than how you would respond to a 15 year old in crisis; however, BOTH situations would need someone who is compassionate and firm.

I am a teacher, and have had several students with similar behaviors (at the beginning of the school year, in non-COVID times). The primary focus is to contain the situation and make sure everyone is safe. When you have a child in your class that elopes, it should be a code red issue, and there should be a para dedicated to working with this child. The child needs consistency, and to be given one-step directions at a time, with clear consequences explained. Many students have experienced trauma, and while individualized therapy and treatment is always going to be the most beneficial, everyone can benefit by using art as a way to express themselves. I give all of my students multiple opportunities through art to help with processing their feelings - I love the idea of a calm down corner (all MCPS classes have to have one), and although the goal is for students to know they have a safe place where they can get themselves together, MOST five-year-olds are not able to regulate their feelings to the point of thinking “I’m feeling angry, let me go sit in the calm down corner.”

I firmly believe in the statement “kids do well when they can,” meaning that kids displaying certain negative behaviors either don’t have the language to articulate what’s going on, or there are special needs that need to be addressed.

It was appalling the way police officers spoke to this five-year-old child, and brought back chilling memories of watching the Netflix documentary series about Gabriel Hernandez, a child that was beaten to death, and and several occasions, had police and CPS workers come to his house and treat him as if he were the criminal, even putting him in the back of a police car for lying/misbehaving.

I hope that the family in this MCPS situation receives compensation but that it be earmarked specifically for therapy and education.

correct. the kind of therapy this kid needs is not covered by insurance or has a very long wait list. but let’s also blame the school - they clearly are not addressing the factors that led to eloping.

+1. The crisis center is just that- for one time crises. Of course I have kids who end up using the crisis center far too often bc they can’t get the ongoing support but it’s not made for that.

No, its not. And, Mom can always go to the crisis center. Mom didn't even try and admits it during the video. She also admits to child has other SN that she ignored.

That poor little boy. Those cops should absolutely be fired and I do fault the school staff as well. I’m an educator and while I admit I get frustrated with certain kids this would not fly in my school. And mom doesn’t seem all that fit either. That little boy needs love and more support.
