In my 20+ years in the county, I've turned in kids for tagging. I've seen gang-related fights IN school in front of my classroom, and I attended one funeral - also gang-related.

We had issues 15 years ago. One principal invited police to our staff meeting so that we could learn how to identify tagging.

Most gang members are smart; they stay under the radar b/c school is where they make their deals. They do the minimum to pass and stay quiet. I've had a handful who were obnoxious.

I can't say I care any longer. I'm moving my family out of the area b/c the county is too big to adequately address any major issues related to curriculum and safety.

If you go far enough back, I’d imagine you can find such things at most schools but they seem pretty rare. For example there were a few white supremacist incidents at one of the Ws right after the election but that hardly makes it a hotbed of racism.

I'm confused. I just looked at the mcps Safety and Security at a Glance reports for all the downcounty consortium schools plus Gaithersburg, and every single one of them has a "0" by "gang-related incidents." Are people claiming this is a lie and there is a ton of gang crime in the schools? Yes, there is gang activity in the county but I would challenge people to show me examples of gang crimes that have occurred at schools. And you certainly cannot draw a conclusion that kids at certain schools *must* be in gangs because they are Hispanic or black.

Seen a lot of posts about gang activity at MCPS high-schools lately and although I suspect some of it is fearmongering, here's a 30+ page thread on it.

If people are going to push these stories they should try to back it up with verifiable statistics.

Yes, it's just like South Central in the 1980s.

No, PP, there are no shooting gangs and stuff. There is, however, an outlet mall where you can buy outlet Hugo Boss and outlet Kate Spade.

DP.. try googling it. I don't think they do. I went to a HS in another state that had real gangs, like those that were constantly on the news.

Ok. I can see why you would like to believe that. But you are wrong. You could not pay me to live anywhere in or near MOCO now. Ten years ago, we loved it. We moved to Fairfax pretty quickly when it became clear things were moving in the wrong direction.

That is projection. I don't think the poster thinks for a second about what anybody from BCC thinks of DCC. But if people are going to openly attack and disparage DCC and Silver Spring, and spread misinformation on a public forum where people actually come to learn something, then yes, of course we will speak up and set the record straight. And that isn't so much because we care what you personally think, (reading your hateful posts, I wouldn't waste my time with you. You're not worth it) but we care what is being said publicly about our neighborhood and our schools.

Silver Spring is not "lesser than" in relation to Bethesda. Neither is it "greater than." It's not a contest. Life and the world in general are so much bigger than this. Let's move on and enjoy our lives.


I can't easily get to my job in Tysons from SS and my spouse works downtown, greenline is not helpful. So not an option for us and neither is a 60+ one-way commute.

If you read the original post the original poster mentioned considering Paint Branch. Olney district actually borders Paint Branch so if the OP is considering Paint Branch upcounty, Sherwood counts.

These people are also afraid to go to the police because that paints a gang target on their back. Snitches get stitches. This is a phenomenon in every gang-infested area of the US, regardless of immigration status. I mean, the son of the lady in the article was killed by MS-13 for talking to police. And she will probably end up dead, too.
