no one died looking for him
How is it that people are jumping straight to claims of desertion vs AWOL?
He sent his things home. He was looking for the Taliban.
If he deserted, he should not receive military benefits. He owes an apology to those that died looking for him and their families, the US. Military, and the American People who may pay for his return. He should be grateful.
I hope he will be able to do something productive with his life after this, otherwise it is a waste.

actually I agree with everything he said and I'm as liberal as they come.
Say something intelligent. Being a Liberal is not an excuse for being dumb. However, being lazy and dumb are reasons people use ad hominem attacks.
If you can't argue the facts of the case then stay home.

Therefore the decision was the right one.

Until he is convicted of desertion or a similar crime, and/or is dishonorably discharged, his service is honorable.
I would say that until he gets an honorable discharge, that his service is in question. You cannot ignore facts.
