Most of those schools are very good. And students may be in state for them. PSU is not a good school.


PSU not a good school? That’s your opinion.

This data is irrelevant to this thread because it doesn’t distinguish between in state and out of state.

They weren’t all VA kids, obviously, but demonstrates that many, many kids will choose OOS schools, even lower-ranked, over UVA.

I couldn’t find cross admit data solely for in-state students, but if the argument is that people pick always UVA because it’s cheaper & better ranked than the other schools admitted, then we wouldn’t see any UVA admits choosing more expensive and lower-ranked schools.

But we do.

UVA 21% Notre Dame 81%
UVA 40% Tufts 60%
UVA 60% Howard 40%
UVA 63% SMU 37%
UVA 67% AU 33%
UVA 68% Villanova 32%
UVA 72% Lehigh 28%
UVA 75% U Rochester 25%

Many kids choose don’t choose the cheapest, highest ranked option.

Many kids prefer OOS.

Not sure why that’s a tough concept.


Look, you can site parchment (or whatever that site is) no until the cows come home, but unless you separate in state from out of state it’s meaningless. For example, if a kid is admitted to both Notre Dame and UVA out of state, yes, I can see them selecting Notre Dame at that rate easily. But in state? Less certain.

My kid got into UVA from a NOVA HS. Thought they wanted to go to UVA, did the tour, but was not ultimately excited about it. Add to that the number of hs friends who also got admitted, they simply didn’t want an extension of hs experience. The OOS flagship they attend is better than UVA in many regards. My kid is very happy with the choice.

Something about uva breaks people. It leaves them poisoned and paranoid. The defensiveness and fear of disapproval renders them emotionally useless. It’s a disaster.

It’s interesting. One of my kids said they felt the same way. Was all set to go to Wisconsin (didn’t apply to Michigan), then got into UVA off the waitlist just before high school graduation. UVA gave 24 hours to decide (I think; might have been longer) and they chose UVA.

It’s a lot easier to turn UVA down from in state before you’re actually admitted than afterwards.

First, it’s Purdue the university not Perdue the chicken. Second, even if this days were reliable and accurate, and we’re not sure it is, it doesn’t account for in state versus out of state. The number that counts - at least for this thread - is the percent of UVA in state kids who are turning it down to go to those other schools out of state.
