Absolutely agree. They want the big school, big sports experience - it's not because the towns of the OOS flagships are so great in comparison to their home cities.

I don’t think the towns even necessarily need to be “better”. Just being somewhere different is fun.

I agree. We have twins that wanted totally different experiences than Wash DC offers (coming from private schools). They do want the bid school experience , big sports included. One is going to the University of Texas. The other is going to PSU. Vastly different schools in some ways. To each their own. We live in DC proper, and both kids said they would never stay in DC for school or even Virginia. They both were accepted to Georgetown and UVA but wanted to attend college farther away from home. I'm excited for them. Who know's how it turns out.

The Georgetown app is a total PITA. Why go through that if you "would never stay in DC for school"?

Yeah, count me as another skeptic.

Living in Virginia makes my kid NOT want to attend UVA. It sure how you convince your kids to do it.

Most of those schools are very good. And students may be in state for them. PSU is not a good school.

First, if you can get in UVA you’re probably in a position to get some serious merit aid at many OOS flagships. Second, not everyone makes affordability &/or USNews rankings their only 2 criteria, which a lot of people here seem completely unable to grasp. Maybe they want better engineering; maybe they want a direct admit to biz school; maybe they hate red brick. When you take your family out to a restaurant, do you all order the same thing?Third, if the abrasive UVA fans here are any indication of who goes there, I’m surprised anybody wants to attend. Maybe so, but the DB on page ONE had delivered his slap in the face before any of that, & even if 50 posters say their kid went OOS due to a UVA rejection, it doesn’t justify claiming ALL kids who went OOS got rejected by UVA. People even turn down Harvard & Stanford for goodness sake—is it so hard to believe someone might prefer another flagship to UVA?

Well, we know he didn’t just apply to UVA, GT and PSU. We know there’s more of a story than that.

And we also know that very, very few kids are going to be accepted to those three schools alone and pick PSU.

Im the PP. Both kids had roughly the same GPA and both had 36 ACT scores.

It may be hard for you to believe, but my kids did not want to go to UVA or Georgetown. They both applied to 10 OOS flagships. Both were rejected from Michigan and UNC. Among those schools they were accepted, Texas and PSU were their favorites.

Not wanting to attend Georgetown is easy to believe. But applying when you don't want to attend makes no sense. It's not a quick or easy app.

Yes. They both went to private in DC. They both applied to Georgetown and UVA as schools they might want to attend. They applied to these schools not knowing what their options would be. I encouraged them to apply to UVA and Georgetown even if they had no desire to attend these universities. However, they both wanted to attend a big OOS flagships for the big sports and big fun. My bad! First time trying the college admissions whirlwind this past year!

I’m sure you tell all your girlfriends that, but they don’t believe it any more than we do.
