Simple. They think people are stupid. So they don't want ideas that they disagree with floating around, because they think people are dumb and won't be able to discern good ideas from bad.

And, since they think people are dumb, they also think that dumb people need to be led and influenced in order to have the "right" ideas. They worry that dumb people will impede "progress."

Many, many people simply don't want to hear anyone else's opinions unless in agreement with their own.

What on earth took her so long? She should have been fired, not allowed to resign. Reminds me of the dean at Oberlin who “left to pursue other opportunities” after idiotically leading the charge against the bakery. Good riddance to these morons.
