I don't drive an SUV and rarely struggle for space in our car. Serious question for the SUV drivers here: why do you feel it's so much more convenient than a regular car?
Own a large SUV. I’m regularly driving my adult-sized kids and their friends. Our family regularly drives to another home with two dogs several hours away, with two dogs. My dad, for whom I’m a primary care giver has no mobility so I’m constantly moving a rollator and wheelchair when I drive him around, in addition to a bunch of groceries for him and a cart I use to bring his groceries up to his place on an elevator. There are many reasons for a large SUV. Looking forward to the season when I won’t need one.

we could all do better environmentally. but unless you’re already only eating meat once per week, only buying local produce, fully avoiding fast fashion, etc. it’s probably better to focus more on doing better yourself than on everyone else’s perceived environmental and social failings. there is definitely an environmental holier than thou attitude that for some people crosses over into their personal effort to find security and control in an unpredictable world

I’ll bite. I prefer being higher up, especially with all of the trucks, minivans, buses, and other taller vehicles on the road. We are all tall and feel cramped in sedans and I cannot stand being so low to the ground when I drive. My SUV has a better turning radius and visibility than any car I’ve ever owned. We make multiple road trips up north and I prefer the AWD of my SUV than FWD and even AWD in some sedans. Our 75lb dog fits well in the 3rd row while the family can sit in the middle row.
We moved to Maryland from Texas many years ago. At the time we loved that, unlike in Texas, you could actually see traffic ahead of you from a sedan because there were significantly fewer SUVs and large trucks on the road. But now, because of this escalation of SUV purchase, the problem is just as bad here now.
This, in buying an SUV to sit up high, you are just escalating the very problem you are trying to solve. There will always be a larger, taller vehicle and unless you are willing to just keep buying larger and larger autos, you will still wind up stuck in traffic surrounded by trucks and SUVs that make it impossible for you to see.
The Clintons sent Chelsea to Sidwell instead of public and I'm not gonna risk my family's safety by driving a tiny car. Physics are physics.
Physics shows how your SUV will tip over and roll even if you don’t even hit anything. You are just looking for justification of your preference.

Not everyone has 2 kids or less. Lacrosse and hockey equipment take up a lot of space.

It is not the size of vehicle or mpg that matters. For instance a school bus gets like 10mpg but carrying 50 kids is way more efficient than 50 tiny cars driving 50 kids separately.
I have a large 11 year old SUV and a new fuel efficient car. I rarely is SUV but kept it as three rows and youngest I still will take kids to mall in car pool, will pick up and drop off daughter at college, will do family trip five of us with luggage or shop for lumber Home Depot.
What is wrong with that? Are you judging me?

DP. Agree about climate change not increasing the risk for earthquakes, but you're wrong about SUVs vs sedans.
