Competition is a poor way to run public institutions because it encourages cheating, rewards the rich while punishing the poor, and exacerbates inequalities. This was most recently demonstrated by Race To The Top.


I agree. Competition also punts on developing good policy directly. Develop good policy and fund it directly -- eg IDEA.

Yes, and it would get rid of predatory for-profit colleges, student loan debt collectors and servicers. States would be forced to step up to fund their public institutions and provide student loans. Student loan costs would likely go up but I think on balance it would be better for higher education.

She won't have the votes to pass her voucher law. She'll spin her wheels and disappear. I'm at the point where I hope the DoE does, too. We did better without them before 1979. Give states huge incentives to improve SAT scores and college access for subgroups, throw big bonus money at those who succeed and be done with it.
