We loved having Hamilton with us. He is a joy. If you ever consider rehoming him, we would love to give him a permanent house. In any case, we are always more than happy to dog-sit him.

I had someone watch my cat for five days this summer and would've been so offended if I came home and she asked "Are you interested in rehoming Fluffy?" Seriously, op, if you ask the owner this, I hope they never ask you to sit again. So rude and presumptuous.

Watching your pet for 5 days while you go on vacation is not the same situation as watching a dog all summer (months!) for nebulous reasons of being "busy".

You get offended too easily.

She's right. It's very weird to ask.
PP here.

I don't see why it's weird, but even if it was, it's nothing to get offended about.

It's weird to assume that someone would be happy to part with their pet. But it's not weird to notice that someone's life has changed significantly since they got the pet and to ask if they would find it helpful for someone else to have primary custody.

Hopefully you can keep him! Or you could get another dog that looks and acts similarly.

What breed is he?

My dogs are always well trained snd several times the neighbors have asked if the could adopt them? Of course I didn’t leave them there all summer ….

They had the dog all summer, which is substantially more than five days. It's a very different situation than yours.

I agree with the "just ask" crowd. The owner is also a relative. I got my dog because I was dogsitting A LOT for an overwhelmed family member and eventually just said "Do you want me to keep her full time?"

What’s its health like? Bills for those cute breeds can add up fast when they’re older.
