This. And why are you blaming your DIL and not expecting your son to have a role and pick up the packages?
I have worked from home during the pandemic and would go bat-sh*#-crazy if someone started expecting me to go to a store on my lunch “hour” (ha!) for some dollar trinket (or $1,000 item). We are freakin’ barely holding it together as families who are managing our careers, helping kids stay educated and entertained in a dramatically different world and dealing with our own sense of existential crises, that running nonsense errands for someone who is doing none of the actual work would be fairly last on my to-do list. Just pick up the items yourself and when you have enough to be worth the shipping, pop it in the mail yourself.

Have the gifts delivered to their house. It's a pandemic, no one wants to go to a store in person to pick up gifts.
This area has a lot of traffic, so it may take a whole lot longer than a lunchtime to get "gifts" and then you have no time to eat lunch.

Well I thought this was fine but I ordered a couple things for the start of school and my son contacts me yesterday saying to please stop because his wife does not "have time" to pickup up the items before school starts. Apparently the store closes too early to go in the evening and even though she teleworks can't find the time to go at lunch? I really don't get how no one wants to shop in a store anymore! I had to take my kids everywhere in person when they were little. Should I just stop sending gifts and wait until the holidays? Or only order from stores that offer curbside pickup so they don't have to physically go in?
Yes, this is what you should do. Or, when you get an idea of something you'd like to send, make a note of it and then when you have enough ideas to add up to free shipping, send them all at once.

In prepandemic times, this would have annoyed me since I prefer online shopping with free shipping to my doorstep. With Covid, I do not set foot inside any enclosed space outside of my home unless absolutely necessary. We are getting almost everything delivered. Please stop this nonsense, OP.
