Yes, if my kid was vaccinated I would absolutely let them attend. We are in a different phase of the pandemic now. There is a risk of a breakthrough case. However, everyone over 12 can be vaccinated now and, as a result, the mantra to "slow the spread" and "flatten the curve" is outdated.
There is a chance that if your kid attends, they might catch a breakthrough case. I'm comfortable taking that chance.

People who have probably been planning this for months or even years and possibly had to postpone it at least once. And back in April or May when they were paying deposits, it looked like Covid was improving, so they went ahead with it. I guarantee that they have been thinking and rethinking every scenario for the last several months to keep this safe but to also make it a memorable celebration for their child. And now suddenly, Covid gets bad. Should they completely cancel everything? Lose deposits? Have family cancel flights/hotels, etc.? Or should they go ahead and make the best of it and let their guests decide whether they come or not?
No, they are not being very, very selfish. They are not forcing anyone to come. They are being very, very human and probably doing the best they can.

Someone who held a Bar Mitzvah in June (by sheer luck when Covid cases were very light) after having rescheduled the date twice, and who also went through dozens of iterations of what the party would look like as well as many sleepless nights and lots of anxiety over the whole affair.
Not the person you are responding too, but every single human life is worth more than your deposits. Heck, I would not want to think even one person got long term covid because of my party during a PANDEMIC. Cry me a river about planning for months or years. It's a pandemic. Plenty of people had to rethink their wedding too. The family should make it clear they understand if people cancel. If I cancelled, which I absolutely would, I would send a generous gift and many well wishes and that is that. Human life is more important then attending a well planned expensive potential super spreader event.

With vaccinated adults at home, I wouldn't have a problem.
Kids, even older teens, are barely impacted by COVID. The only factors that would have me say no would be if my child had existing health conditions and was obese. Those are the two factors that are clearly present in the very incredibly rare handful of kids who get sick enough from COVID.

I would earlier in the summer but we are not talking chances like this just before school starts. That’s the last thing I need, and making sure they make it to school is my first priority right now.

According to whom? I know of at least 10 fully vaccinated people who have gotten COVID in the past month. Someone is lying to the public about breakthrough cases. The vaccine will likely prevent death and hospitalization, but I really doubt that it is effective as our government is saying at preventing COVID.
